Some old video codecs were proprietary and had to be installed afterwards from a separate repository or package, that might be where that notion is coming from. That being said once the relevant codecs are installed (open-source or proprietary) things just work fine, or you could install VLC or mpv and just call it a day.

You're right on the money. They're trying to region lock it. Unlikely that US and possibly UK customers will get it.

We also found references to a region lock in this API, which suggests that Apple could restrict it to specific countries. This wouldn’t make sense for MDM solutions, but it does make sense for enabling sideloading in particular countries only when required by authorities – such as in the European Union.

man i wish side-loading was real

I'm not discounting System76's support (hell to my friend Linux is hard, but rewarding), but I am saying that this sort of thing is still alien to the average consumer. I've seen university students not know what a command line is.

But I use Wayland.

Friend of mine has a System76 laptop and had to talk to their support about issues with the webcam on certain apps. It was fixed but they asked him to check lsusb. This guy only knows the basics of the terminal from me having to teach him.

KDE, just because it's a good balance of usability and customisability.

That’s the fediverse for you! I’ve had better software discussion outside of it tbh.

Anyhow, library management on Apple Music is also way less annoying than on Spotify, especially when handling tracks you import from your local library.

For near-guaranteed compatibility, there are dedicated manufacturers like System76 and Tuxedo. Framework also claims Linux compatibility but for set tested distros (Ubuntu and Fedora).

Generally, anything with Intel/AMD graphics and Intel Wifi is pretty much guaranteed to work in my experience. For laptops, high-DPI displays can be problematic but the fixes are on Wayland which is getting higher priority now.

Same. The moment I got a card with Wifi from Intel, it was so much better.

Isn't it in xbps-src? IIRC the Void guys don't want to package things that don't have a blanket redistributable clause in their license.
