tl;dw: Linux user discovers the magical wonders of customizing your system from the ground-up and make it usable.

I love it at how most online communities goes like this:

Day one, no exploits: "Linux is the most perfect OS there is!"

To suddenly,

Day two, two exploits found: "ERMERGEHD LINUX IS A PILE OF SHIT HAHA OMG COMPLETELY UNUSABLE HOW ON EARTH SOMEONE WOULD WANT TO USE SUCH PIECE OF CRAP AHHAAH OMG WOW! DID I SAID IT'S SHIT?"

Folks really love to extrapolate things for the sake of drama, sadly.

It's completely fine to use a beginner-friendly distro and stick with it. Just be aware you are missing a lot by not going deeper into linux.

t. Started with ZorinOS. Ended up using (pretty much) anything that is in front of me, minimal install, sway, no DE. On a orange pi 5 MAX.

Simply put -- you've got to realize a couple things:

1- Linux is not Windows.

2- Use Linux like a brand new type of software you never heard about -- do not make any pre-assumptions.

3- Use Google to search for the most simple things, including "How do I install something on (Linux distro name you've chosen)"?

4- Have some patience -- you won't learn (everything) on day one. There will be mistakes, there will be problems you will not solve em today. But you will solve em tomorrow.

And here's a little "cheat sheet" of mine on how to use (and get used with) linux:

1- Get used how to use the package manager. (Where you will search and install stuff.)

2- Learn what are your audio and graphic packages (The "drivers") are. (See 3- above.)

3- Learn how to run the stuff you installed.

4- Learn how you configure the distro to your liking.

Learn all these four steps, and you can consider yourself a linux "pro" user.

Guess I must be an alien then. (That's 'pure' sway -- no toolbars, icons... nothing. I use my own dmenu-esque app to run binaries.)

Forgot to mention it also has a "poor man's htop" at the top center of the screen, that fetches memory and cpu usage at each keystroke (only). Definitely not for the "powerhouse PC gamer" out there, but for the potatoes (raspberry pi zero, a very old router, etc).

The code can be found by clicking here. Then save it as ttymenu.c and compile this with "gcc ttymenu.c -o ttymenu -O3 -Wall -static (-Bstatic if you are on macos)".

That is a bunch of unnecessary noise just because an AI managed to code a working python code for you. Like that'd make your command "cursed" or some sort.

You will go back to your "usual" linux setup when you realize that most packages you set up with LFS are now broken and you'll need to redo the whole process again.

t. arch linux minimal installation only master race

[–] GustavoM@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Absolutely yes. You'd be better buying a dedicated PC for Linux tho.

t. Got a Orange pi 5 MAX with Linux installed. It's tricky to set up, but worths a lot in the end (low power usage while providing a decent performance -- can be used as a "mini server" to host your own personal file server or anything else you'd like while providing a smooth experience for anything your job may require from it.)

I don't mind a little "change" every now and then, but still -- "Sway" on my "potatoes" (Orange pi zero 3 and Orange pi 5 max) and "Hyprland" on my x86_64 PC.

How to become a hacker

Average Linux user: Hack the white house

Your mom: Install pi-hole

Makes you pretend you are working for NASA or for the FBI.

Instructions on how to compile the code and everything else can be found inside the code right here.

Just a little "something" I came up with. Instructions on how to compile, including a screenshot link are in the code.

Title. Just noticed that it has not been updated since a while. Also, what are the best alternatives to it?

Thanks in advance.

tl;dr: Run "docker run -it --rm --log-driver none --cap-drop=ALL --read-only --net none --security-opt=no-new-privileges --name ascii-matrix defnotgustavom/ascii-matrix" for a perfect cmatrix clone + ascii elmo.

Check thread link for more info.

Title. Just imagine the possibilities of having your own "homemade internet"!

...other than the logical factors of dust and the damage it can cause to components.

t. Got a orange pi zero 3 running caseless for almost an year.

tl;dr

Editing;

$photoortexteditoryoulike $(find / -iname incompletefilenam*)

Running;

exec $(find / -iname incompletepackagenam*)

Interacting (copying, moving, etc);

$desiredinteraction $(find / -iname desiredfileorpackag*) /desired/output/directory

It may be a "not-so-attractive" tip for most of you, but I find it really useful when I want to edit a specific file (that is located alongside several ones, like a picture or a text file). Or when I've finished compiling something and I want to find the binary file asap. Saves me lots of time on really slow pcs (like a rpi zero).

Title. Basically, a lower panel that shows the latest news, etc (fetched from a rss link or a sequence of rss links) while scrolling left (ala CNN). Why? I'm trying to make a "smart clock" of sorts that shows a live stream, a real time clock and -also- the latest news -- all crumbled together in a single screen.

I'm using a orange pi zero 3 w/ Dietpi installed. And due to the expected "crazyness" of this idea, I had to resort to you guys.

Thanks in advance.

Title. Is it the Logitech MX? Thanks in advance.

Title. Been using "conventional mouses" since a while, and I'm in the mood to try something new. Even so considering its a ergonomic mouse that won't screw my wrists even more while gaming(I'm over 40 y/o).

There are plenty of reviews for it on the internet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_2wixvrWPg&pp=ygUVcmFnbm9rIG1vdXNlIDIgcmV2aWV3 for instance) but I'd like to hear some "real world" reviews about it.

I know this seem like a typical "Your opinion man" post but honestly, is there anything really useful beyond hosting an adblocker? (read: complementary, not found elsewhere, that enhances own's personal needs and/or life as a whole). And yes, I'm aware of what can be hosted -- picture editors, video editors, webtops, dhcpcd, emulators, and so on.

But the question is -- why I'd need all that if these stuff can be found on any ordinary PC out there? Even phones. Hell, even on a smart tv. That is like "trying to reinvent the wheel" for no necessary purpose other than "to look cool". There's also "because its fun", but is it really fun doing pretty much the same thing over and over again? There isn't a "learning gap" between these hosting options -- all of em have (pretty much) the same procedure to get things running.

With that said... I've been trying really, REALLY hard to host more stuff but I can't go beyond hosting (only) an adblocker.
