I'm all for getting into old school tech, I even like to browse neocities.org on occasion just for the hit of nostalgia for the old web rings. I never got into newsgroups though, and I'm wondering what reasons you might use that instead of something like Lemmy, Mastodon etc?

Apart from the piracy side, I know all about that already lol

So I want to build a home server to use as a media server, and to back up my photos etc.

I am also currently doing an online course, and happen to spend some time at work as well as at home working on it. I don't like using Google where I can help it, but I find google docs really useful. So I'm wondering if there's an open source application that works essentially the same, but I could run off my own server? It would have to be web-based as I use Windows at work and can't install new programs :/

edit: Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I've got quite a few leads to follow now, it should be fun!

I just stumbled across this while trying to learn a bit more about using the command line, and thought others might appreciate it. It comes in a printable format so you can stick it up on your wall :)

There's nothing wrong with having active discussion about how the largest Lemmy instance is being run. Maybe it'll even nudge the admin to reflect on their policy choices, you never know.

I mean I guess I do agree with the sentiment that defederating shouldn't be the default response to finding offensive content on another instance.

If you check the highest scoring comment on this post you'll see it's also me, because I also find the content on that instance highly offensive. I'm just wary because Lemmy still feels very new, and the our behaviours now might set a precedent for the future, and I don't want every disagreement to end up with another instance defederated.

And no I don't use the N word regularly, I'm not even from the US

I just had a look at the main page, and saw a post with the line, "The lying cunts at shit Just Woke are trying to claim that we're Nazis because we fight against their far lefty woke ass shit about transgenderism and how it's used to groom and mutilate children", and another that says, "Reeeeeeee!! Don’t you understand that unless I read soft porn children’s novels to five year olds about the joys of anal sex, that trans kids will literally be genocided!!?! Reeeeee!!"

Yeah I'm comfortable with people not wanting to associate with an instance like that. You wanna be a part of it, go for it. Doesn't mean the rest of us need be exposed to that kind of ignorance, bigotry and hate.

I was skeptical of this claim so I went and had a look. Here's some of the posts I saw:

"Polar Ice Sheets are thicker than ever despite predictions that the Arctic and Antarctic would be ‘Ice free’"

"Leftist Parents “Flee” Florida Because Of New Laws Blocking Child Mutilation"

"It’s strange how you never see pedophiles, im sorry, drag queens reading to old people instead of kids"

So yeah some pretty insane takes there

So one of the benefits of a streaming service is the recommendation algorithm suggesting new shows to you. They're not perfect but I have discovered great shows in the past because of it. So to replace that I've found a great app called JustWatch. It asks you to select what services you're subscribed to so I just choose all of them, then select what shows I've watched and which I liked, and its algorithm suggests new shows to watch. You can also use it to track what episodes you're up to, which I'm sure is great for people more organised and less ADHD than I am!

Disclaimer - I suspect this app is australian-centric, but there must be other apps out there for your country too.
