I took my girlfriend and friend out to dinner.

Friend says, "I love living with someone."

Turning to my girlfriend, she asks, "how do you feel?"

My girlfriend looks at me and then replies, "it's....fine."

What do you feel is an appropriate response?

I sat down with her later and tried to talk about it, but she said she was joking. I just don't get the joke.

I have noticed that alot of people think the majority of people are stupid based on the things they read online or maybe even experience in real life but I think that there is better explanation than just assuming people are stupid.

A common example people bring up to show that other people are stupid is mentioning how a lot of people believe in conspiracy theories ( such as Qanon or Flat earth) and point out how they are objectively false therefore the people that believe it are stupid.

However when you examine these beliefs in more depth there is obviously some amount of internal logic that is used to justify these beliefs to themselves and others in the group.

You can go to flat earthers forum and they can give huge amounts of "evidence" about how light shouldn't be visible after 50 kms if the earth was round or how in Qanon there are probably people who have whole boards detailed with connections between how and where democrats participate in satanic rituals but my point is that all conspiracy theories tend to form one cohesive narrative like a collective story that are building.

To be able to make a story that is this detailed it definitely required some amount of forethought and reasoning to make it so everyone in the group reaches the same collective understanding.

This then might lead you to ask why are people susceptible to these ideas and what makes them stick. Well I think that it boils down to three different things.

  1. Our collective feeling that things aren't going well
  2. Our general distrust in current authorities
  3. Our collective belief that an authority is good/necessary

When you look at how people tend to be influenced into accepting these beliefs it also follows this same general pattern.

  1. People feel that some part of their life isn't going well and that current institutions aren't helping them anymore.
  2. A guru/influencer shows up and offers advice (sometimes good advice) to fix their problem
  3. People then start trusting these gurus/influencers and seeing them as authorities
  4. Finally these people take what these gurus/influencers say at face value and build internal lore for their community that makes sense to them given that they accept what the new authority says as fact.

If you want to tackle the root of what makes people susceptible to these ideas you have to tackle those three things or else people will fall into those same traps just with different authorities saying different things.

Also as a semi-related point there are a million and one things that an individual can choose to focus on and become knowledgable about so whilst some people spend that mental capacity on understanding tech or politics others spend that mental capacity on flat earth theory or UFOs.

Main point:

So all of this is to say I think that people aren't stupid and that we should not treat them as they are such instead if we understand that they are capable of complex reason but they are starting with different base knowledge it'll be easier to empathize with others. Also if we want society to be less susceptible to this we need to fix one or all of the three things I mentioned that makes us susceptible.

Hello everyone,

FYI, I got the moderation rights if you look at the local version: https://lemmy.world/c/casualconversation

However, on my instance (and others as well), it's not the case yet: https://discuss.tchncs.de/c/casualconversation@lemmy.world

https://lemm.ee/c/casualconversation@lemmy.world

It has been a few hours, LW has been down for a bit, so let's see how it evolves! https://lemmy-status.org/

I just intended to grant the mod rights to an alt of mine, but even that seems difficult now

Hope you are all well

Lets bring some positivity to people you might see around a lot and generally praise them for making good contributions to the platforms growth!

I really enjoy seeing @Blaze@sopuli.xyz around a lot and @ShittyKopper@lemmy.blahaj.zone, they aren't the only ones I appreciate but they are the first that come to mind. I also appreciate @MicroWave@lemmy.world and their news posts a lot. I like being kept in the loop and the articles they curate seem to always be really high quality.

A bit late today, sorry for that.

I'll try to automate this process, probably next week.

Moving to a daily format as weekly threads tend to be buried under new content.

Hello everyone,

As you may have noticed, I'm trying to revive this community. However, I noticed that is actually overlaps quite a lot with !general@lemmy.world

Do you think we should move there, so that we can have more content and activity on one place?

The hardest part to get a community started is now, when you need to build traction, and I think it makes sense to use the larger userbase of !general (10k subs vs 4k here)

Let me know what you think!

Unpopular opinion, I know, but the fact that lemmy has spam bots means that we've arrived! We're a large enough target to be worthwhile of the spammers. It's badge of Honor

Hello szmer.info spammers!

In my case, a few things, but probably being healthy, having a good quality of life in a safe country. Being able to spend time with my friends and family.

I'm a very bad cook, so trying to find some inspiration

Don't really know what I'm expecting here... I'm just venting I guess.

What are you guys up to? How is your week going?

Last night was the first time in a month when I had a full night of sleep. Now I've been waking up at 8AM instead of going to bed at 2 PM. Don't have a lot of people to share with but I'm not sure how to describe how I feel. It's like the absence of a headache I didn't know I had. My body feels much lighter and energetic. Hopefully I'll get back to cooking for myself this week!

Just a chill thread to talk about anything you want

It's now been a few times where an older adult (maybe 50+ years old) has called me "endearing", i always associated this term with children, but i am fully grown adult. Is there something i'm doing wrong? Why are people using a term for children for adults?

Edit: ok thanks everyone, apparently there's a misunderstanding on my part and this word can be used for adults

This article describes a connection between wellness and self care and the extremist groups that we have seen pop up the last years.

I thought it was interesting to see how missing research for women is causing more people to see the mainstream as 'wrong' and looking for alternative truths.

Title should explain it. What are you working on? What are you excited about? Looking to make new friends, so 👋 and let me know you're alive. 😀

And by god was it absolutely terrible. New restaurant, clean on the inside, tried 3 different things and I have to wonder, does anyone actually like jack-in-the-box? How are they still in business?

24

... and holy hell is it so much fun. I sat down and played it with my bf for 4 hours last night and it felt like no time went by at all.

I've never been so engrossed in a game like this so quickly. I'm normally terrible with souls-like games (Dark Souls, Elden Ring, etc) and quickly rage quit. But this game is different somehow?

It runs like crap though which is probably not unusual in games released recently... not a fan of that personally.

Has anyone else here played it? If so, what did you think?

I'vе nоtiсed thаt my mind stаrts tо wаnder most of thе time thаt I scroll thrоugh sociаl media. I usuаlly start by thinking аbоut somеthing thаt I fоund imрortant аnd by thе time I hаve finishеd scrolling thrоugh sociаl media feed I usuаlly аm thinking аbоut somеthing comрletely different (sometimes its stuff I find really dumb).

I think thеre is so much hаppening оn sociаl media thаt it basically stаrts drowning оut whаtever I wаnted tо think аbоut thаt day.

Tо avoid thаt I'vе deсided tо сome tо thеse platfоrms with an idea аbоut thе kind of infоrmatiоn I wаnt tо see аnd activеly search fоr it insteаd of looking at whаtever c/all is showing me.

Tо break dоwn whаt I аm gоing tо try аnd dо diffеrеntly is this:

  1. Кnow whаt I аm looking fоr аnd activеly search fоr thаt kind of infоrmatiоn

  2. Once I'vе fоund thаt infоrmatiоn, when I'm disсussing it with othеrs I wаnt tо focus оn thе tоpic at hаnd аnd nоt gеt sidetracked with othеr tоpics.

  3. Sharing whаt I аm gоing tо dо diffеrеntly in respоnse tо thе infоrmatiоn I'vе rеad so thаt othеrs can understаnd me a little better.

So whаt аre your thoughts?

Edit: r/all -> c/all
