Also notice the language. climate change is "alarmist" and a "hoax". When you look at countries like Russia you can see that this kind of language can be easily turned into climate activist becoming "foreign agents" hurtung the US with "false news" and "missinformation". Hence they clearly have to be arrested. Obviously this is down the line, but it is not hard to find right wing comments about killing, arresting and otherwise removing leftist.

We already see that being talked about with "anti white racism" and the FBI supposed to be used to counter that, after the FBI would be palced directly under Trump, who is above the law as president. You get the picture.

Just use roofs.

Manufacturing solar panels, EVs and batteries was only responsible for 1.6% of China’s electricity consumption and 2.9% of its emissions in the first half of 2024.

That is genuinly intressting.

Easy solution privatize all roads. No need to pay subsidies to drivers....

and Voltaire was wrong. It was "Holy" as in the pope had no authority over it, as it is "Holy" already. "Roman" as it larps to be Roman from time to time and "Empire", because it was an actual Empire.

!europe!europe@feddit.org comes to mind as a somewhat political community, with a non US focus. It however has a lot of Germans in it.

We are two years in the war and Russia has not started construction on a new gas pipeline. None are currently in a stage, where they even prepare construction. Even if they wanted to do it, a new pipeline costs billions and takes years to be built. Russia is unable to do that right now. LNG is not an option, due to lacking the technology. The truth is everybody knows that Russia needs to sell gas and that means lower prices. Again Gazprom is loosing money and they will not have the ability to sell more gas for years.

Russia exports its gas via pipelines. Most of them go to Europe. At least for the most part. Russias LNG exports are pretty small and sanctions prevent them from exporting more. The Russians also cut most pipeline gas sales to the EU. That has halved Russias gas exports abroad. They only really sell to China and Turkey, as well as the bit of LNG they have and the bit of EU sales they did not cut. All of that leads to Gazprom the only company exporting Russian gas loosing money.

Oil is more difficult as it is easier to transport, but we recently saw a massive decline in shipments to India. India is Russias biggest oil client, so a decline is horrible for Russia. Furthermore Russia is stopping exports of refined products due to refineries in Russia being hit.

Generally speaking the EU is doing just fine in terms of energy security. Higher gas prices increase the speed to transition away from it and that removes Russias biggest potential market. China does not want a new gas pipeline to Russia and is therefore unable to replace Europe as a cutomer. Especially with China trying to move into a post carbon economy themself. As for oil the better way is for the US to not consume as much.

Last year Germany had a 10% reduction in emissions with a 0.3% decline in GDP. German GDP dropped by 3% due to the 2008 financial crisis. So oversimplified maths says a fairly noraml recession is enough to solve it. The investment into green technologies necessary to maintain a or enable a good material quality of life for everybody would boost the global economy a lot. Obviously there would be regions doing much worse, but others would do a lot better.

Most of what made the panedmic so bad, was the lack of social interactions. That is not a problem in terms of emissions. What is, is commuting to work.

We see a bunch of things happening. First of all the West attacked and keeps attacking Russias oil production and exports with sanctions, due to Russias invasion of Ukraine. That means we actually have one of the biggest oil producers and exporters being taken out of the game. Something similar happened with Venezuela and Iran previously. So we actually see declines, just not choose by the countries themself, but mainly by the US, to keep out competition. At the same time 2023 oil consumption is 1.7% above 2019 oil consumption. The pandemic had a massiv effect on the industry and a lot of production is being restarted. However we also see EVs starting to have an impact. There are also a lot of other pushes mainly by net oil importers to reduce oil consumption. This seems to start to actually hurt the industry.

If I had to guess, we probably see the next reduction in oil production in the Middle East. Not due to the governments wanting to produce less oil, but due to a war in the region.
