Not sure if you realize this, but people often take a lot of pride in where they went to college. A way to show that pride and continue the connection once you've moved on in life is to follow athletics.
Also I like that you conveniently forget there is literally a whole month of the year where the media talks nonstop about college bball. Hell, even US Presidents fill out brackets lol.
