Less games = each game is more important. The playoffs are also way more important.
It's really as simple as this.
Because the team aspect in college can be the difference of winning versus losing. This can be seen with upsets in March Madness, in particular the 1 vs 16.
Once some players have made it to the NBA, some of them lose that passion for basketball and the team aspect. Defence goes out the window in the NBA and traveling is encouraged.
Alumni and March madness reach a much larger audience
baseball is kind of the outlier, college basketball and football are immensely popular in the USA. that's just american sports culture, college sports have always been a big deal for a variety of reasons. a big one for football/basketball is historically there hasn't really been any serious academy system, so the best american players in the world were playing in college before going pro. so it's where you go to see the players who will be the stars in the next generation.
People have a much closer connection to their alma mater than they do to a sports team that’s not pubilically owned and can leave the city anytime it wants.
I think that depends on circumstance and how long you have been attached to the school. I personally care way more about the Lakers than my schools sports teams.
That depends on the school you went to as well. A shit basketball school isn't going to generate the attention or fandom of a traditional power school.
March Madness
An end of year, massive 68 team single elimination bracket made up of schools from every conference, every walk of life. Every teams plays like it's the last game of their lives, because for some of them, it could be. The win or go home situation in NBA Game 7s is part of what makes Game 7 such an iconic phrase, but for those kids in that tournament, every game is Game 7. It makes for some of the most incredible moments in the history of sports.
I've always thought that if I were to change the NBA playoff format, I'd want it to be similar. Not a single elimination bracket, but perhaps a triple elimination bracket.
March Madness is the single greatest sports tournament in the world.

yes big NCAA regular season games have pretty good ratings. it's not just the tournament and then everything else is ignored.
Not sure if you realize this, but people often take a lot of pride in where they went to college. A way to show that pride and continue the connection once you've moved on in life is to follow athletics.
Also I like that you conveniently forget there is literally a whole month of the year where the media talks nonstop about college bball. Hell, even US Presidents fill out brackets lol.
That is literally only a thing in the USA, anywhere else in the world people don’t think about their school at all after they’ve graduated. So if OP is not American it makes sense they wouldn’t understand it.
Also again, only US media talks about it. I’m Canadian and I’ve never seen anything in the media about March madness in Canada. Im living in Europe now, I don’t think anyone here even knows what March madness is.
And making a rough guess off OPs post history I am going to assume it’s likely they are not American.
Imagine a postseason where a team like the Lakers could potentially be knocked out by like a semi-pro team based in Montana. That's what makes college basketball exciting. You can see some small school you've never heard of being able to take out Duke.
