Self hosted, very simpel, runs in browser (therefore accessable cross-plattform, mobile and desktop) and looks good enough.
It was my initial idea to consume news after reddit died for me. Thankfully, Lemmy files that gap <3

You follow the people that share the same interests than you. What are you interested in? What do you expect people suggest you? It is totally depended on what you have for hobbies or the topics you are interested in. If I tell you to follow a Football-Player, a local politician or a niche PCB Designer, what would that give you? Find out what things you are interested in and then find the people connected to those interests.

I use pocket casts since years. Never felt like needing the plus. Just checked the benefits and I think I am still good. Before a flight I download dozens of podcast to my phone via WiFi and use the list of downloaded podcasts to keep track of them.
I see no need for the following features for me:
