I would like to try ESXI but once I come to the paid features, I may want to switch to XCP-ng or another one. I will be using ZFS.

I'm considering running ESXi on bare metal and then virtualising TrueNAS am wondering if this is the best platform if you want to have the most job opportunities while having all the home server fun.

I want to run my own cloud so I will be using NextCloud and also a media streaming platform to the TV.

Since I'll be using ZFS storage, how will I know whether to run a VM on ESXi or on TrueNAS?

Would use XCP-ng instead of ESXi?

There may be some other options or things I've missed. Thanks!

Yes I'd like to use ZFS and TrueNas. I'm not sure if I should use Scale or Core. I'd like to use my server for many tasks.

What do you mean by real ECC support? With hardware or software?

After reading from different posts that 1 bit memory errors are fixed but 2 bit memory errors are not fixed but they are only reported while using consumer grade CPUs and motherboards with ECC memory, I am wondering if I should continue with my build or whether I should change it to support the full ECC experience.

Currently, the CPU I am going for is the Ryzen 7 5700X and the motherboard is the Asrock B550M Pro4. I've already bought everything except the CPU and the motherboard: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/GysckJ

Is there a comparable alternative which makes full use of unbuffered UDIMM ECC memory and is it worth it? Or is there a different type of ECC RAM and setup that would work better for a server build? Thank you.

I haven't explored very much what I'll do but I want to be able to play Minecraft on my laptop (which it crashes now when I load it). I'm also getting a 1660 GPU for the server to transcode to the laptop.

I also want my laptop to not run out of RAM when using Chrome so I will VM from the server.

I'd like to run my storage.

I've made my first server part list which I plan to upgrade the RAM for when needed and the drives if I need to. Are these parts balanced?

I plan to use TrueNAS Scale with the XCP-ng hypervisor and VMing programs to my laptop.

Storage will be ZFS. I only have < 256GB of data so my two old hard drives with an external HDD backup will be enough (if this works). The SSD will be the OS drive.

How much can this build scale and are there any bottlenecks?

The case, CPU cooler and SSD have already been bought.

Thanks.
