I think a lot of people (myself included) don't really think Google fell behind in the ml space but rather didn't manage to capitalize on their own invention.

It's more a business side issue rather than a R&D one.

Also deep mind, although owned by Google is a separate entity.

this is the right answer. The question screams novice. And his comment "You are entitled to your own opinion" when faced with advice shows that he's not willing to learn

OpenAI has a history of hyping the hell out of their discoveries. Remember GPT-2 that they didn't want to release because it was too powerful but turns out it was pretty bad and they released GPT3 anyway?

To be fair, 5 year Olds don't have the innate ability to know how tic tac toe works. Someone had to teach them. We just chose not to teach that to llms.
