I wonder why you say "countries in the west" and not just "countries". It's not like, I don't know, Banín is shouting about North Korea every day and nobody listens.

When it's hot, yes.

Practice. And then practice more And more And even more. Unlike all the shame people give it, I still think that Duolingo is a good tool. But, Duolingo on its own is not enough. Without using the language you won't get it.

I used Duolingo for Italian French czehc and Greek. It is enough for me to allow me know what an article is about in these language. If you want to get to conversation level, be ready to embrasse yourself. Without willing to make these mistakes, no matter what you do, you won't manage the language.

For context, my experience: Italian: started with Duolingo, eventually hired a teacher to improve my speaking level. I'm not perfect, but I manage to joke with the casual Italians I meet. French: used almost only Duolingo. There are however plenty of books and films and shows in french. I was in Paris a year ago, communicated almost solely in french and managed to do everything I need (including taking a friend to a clinic after he hit his head) Greek: started with Duolingo and hired a teacher for a while. It is hard to find communication partners and material so my level is not as high as I would like. To manage reading an article I need to concentrate very hard. Czech: still basic. I'm only half way through the Duolingo tree. I'm searching for other rmaterials, but I'm mostly lacking the time to dedicate myself to the task.

Not really. I have a Google drive, but I gradually reduce my use of it. I don't upload personal stuff there.

I have two hard drive at home that I use to sync all my information from my phone/computer to for backup (using syncthing). One day I'll pay for a fixed IP/VPN service for remote access to these drives. The two drives are in two different locations in the house.

I would like to have a drive in an additional location for backup. But I don't want it online.

Example: if we are willing to walk around with smartphones that are 5mm thicker and 50g heavier, and a bit less slick in design, we can fix them instead of buying new ones. This kind of things. And we are not even willing to give that up.

This guy speaks about this (I'm not sure if this is the right video)

Came here to say that, thank you.

Add to everything that people said here the fact that most movies are basically shit

Important questions, I've added this to my original post:

  • The files are mp4
  • I’m using kubuntu 24.10
  • I’m using Dolphine file browser

I have a Samsung phone and I use the default camera to take videos. Then, in my home wifi, I transfer the files to my server using syncthing. The folders where these files are stored is then mounted on a different computer via lan (my main machine). The videos on that machine don't always have thumbnails and I'm not sure why. How can I track that down? At what stage should the thumbnail be generated?

Technical information (based on questions that I am asked):

  • The files are mp4
  • I'm using kubuntu 24.10
  • I'm using Dolphine file browser

Solution
On dolphin go to settings -> preview -> file size for remote storage.

I'm trying to be more aware of the photo I'm taking. Try to capture something and use some basic rules like third. Took this photo a few weeks ago. Nothing sophisticated, used my Samsung phone.

Crocheting granny squares. My daughter got into crochet and I wanted to knit for a while so I asked her to teach me. After learning the basics I picked up what I need so I can make myself a blanket while commuting to work.

When smart watches were begining to be a thing, a friend of mine bought a smartwatch for like 5$ in Ali express. When I asked him how the watch is he said "I am surprised that even for this low price, they still managed to disappoint me"

I think that your score is too high. It should be lower..

The thing is like this: I have a windows laptop I use for work, and a Linux desktop machine. I have a single screen keyboard etc. and I switch between the two using a docking station. But, I wonder if there is a way for me to "cut the middle man" and just plug/unplug my linux machine.

I guess I can use a remote desktop solution approach on my laptop, but I wonder if there is a more "extreme" solution. Mostly since I have only one Ethernet port in my home office.

The company I work in switched to a new building, and we have those stupid doors with RFID cards on them. I'd be damned if I'm going walk with that I'm-working-in-hightech-company-card dangling of my belt. I wonder if there is a way for me to use my phone for credentials. I tried searching for it, and all I could find is ways for me to use the phone in order to copy the info from one card to another.

So is it somehow possible?

As expected, me, as a single mod, requires some help. I'll keep this post pinned and update it when needed. At the moment, what the community needs (except for more active users) is:

  1. Another mod, even if there is not a lot of work to do, I'd still be happy if we can have redundancy.
  2. Design for the community logo and banner.
  3. A bot to update the sidebar - this is something I can do myself, only it will take me sometime to get there.

Hi, new user coming from Reddit, as many. Trying to orient with Lemmy, I realize that I still don't understand the idea of instances well enough. Or maybe the fediverse. So there are plenty of instances, and each is supposed to be dedicated to a topic, but this is a very fluid definition. Anyhow, how do I search for instances? I mean, if I'm in Lemmy.world, I can click "instances" and I get the list of instances that are relevant. Sure, I can use google for that, but my logic tells me that there should be a more organic way.

And this leads to another question, how can I browses communities on other instances with my already existing account? What about platforms such as mastodon where I'm supposed to be able to browse and submit and such?

And finally, is there a search per community possibility?

Sorry, I'm still confused about these.

Or maybe it is only me?

When I'm clicking a link to a community on the instance I'm logged into (Lemmy.world), the community opens in my web browser rather than in jerboa. Given, this is annoying especially when I want to subscribe to that community.

I should note that I'm using a url checker app so this might be the reason for such behavior.
