It’s mostly a question of “can we attract enough users for the ecosystem to be workable” and I think the answer is “yes.” Hell, for me it already is.

And this I completely agree with.

As long as there's enough of us to maintain a community here, then we're golden 🙂. And I'm definitely under the impression that we're getting there.

I honestly don't think the fediverse will become nearly as popular as many seem to.think. It's still complicated to use/understand for many non-tech enthusiasts, and in the case of Reddit, while people are angry, I doubt most of their users are going anywhere any time soon. Some will leave, but it's not going to be a small number.

We keep going on about how Reddit relies on it's "creators", without whom they'll die. Frankly, a lot of the highest rated content is just repost of old videos or tiktok videos. A lot of that stuff isn't original, and the deep conversations are, in my opinion, few and far between. Sure there are some communities whi h have this, but they're not exactly over represented.

Yeah, I felt the same when I read his post on Reddit. He worded things incredibly badly, and even I, when reading his post, got the impression that he wanted 10 million dollars to "make their problem go away". It almost feels like he was testing the water by being vague about it, before backpedaling when he realized they weren't into that.

[Edit] I get that he was probably trying to prove the point that their price was ridiculous and Apollo couldn't be costing them that much, but man. Terrible way to communicate that. You're not trying to sell your old TV to some guy in a bar here!

How does this work on Lemmy? Can mods edit users posts?

Makes sense. I assume the same applies to communities hosted be said instance. What, however, happens to posts one has made on other communities whos instances are still running? I assume posts made there will still be there, but the usernames will point to dead links?

Is it at all possible to migrate users or communities from one instance to another?

I to thought it wise to pick one with high numbers. It had nothing to do with being afraid of not having people to talk to though, as I understood that we'd all be connected. It was more a fear that an instance with 20 users might get shut down because the owner got bored. In my mind it seems less likely that a popular instance gets shut down.

So what happens to an account if an I stance goes away?

Oh, I'm not saying it's not good for us (or maybe I did. Badly worded in that case). I just don't think Reddit cares or will notice to be honest.

I agree. A few more people will learn about Lemmy and come over, but to call it an exodus is probably nowhere near accurate. I just don't think most people care enough. Yes Reddit will suffer. I'm just not convinced Lemmy will benefit that much.

That said, I think we will benefit in the sense that there will now be enough people to sustain some nice communities.

Haven't we reached the point where it doesn't actually matter as much as it used to? A lot has been separated out into services that get updated through the play store. So being left behind isn't as big of a problem anymore as long as you're still getting security updates.
