If the justification is that AM radio is useful in emergency scenarios, the sound quality is largely irrelevant. As long as you can make out instructions and warnings that might be given after a disaster (such as “Avoid area A due to flooding”, “Heated shelter available at schools”), then it’s serving its point. Whether it’s good for music or talk shows isn’t the point here.

The Overton window is not something that can be changed electorally. Candidates can only get on the ballot in the first place if they’re within the Overton window, as anybody outside the window is “radical” or “extreme”, and the existing political powers forbid their candidacy. The electoral window is moved outside the electoral process, and only then can the electoral system permit new candidates with new ideas.

Those people are never on my ballot, unfortunately.

First, I must confess that over the last few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in the stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Council-er or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I can't agree with your methods of direct action;" who paternalistically feels he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by the myth of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait until a "more convenient season."

That’s what cat /etc/os-release is for.

It could with software ray tracing, but it doesn’t have any GPUs. The CPU cores aren’t especially fast either, they just have a lot of them.

Strikes only have so many restrictions because the US government would like to effectively outlaw them without appearing to have outlawed them.

I genuinely think the only legal restriction on growing plants should be if there is credible evidence that it harms the local ecology, and then a ban can be bypassed if the harmful plant is grown in an environment that would prevent that harm (eg in an indoor lab setting where seeds/spores/etc wouldn’t be able to escape).

Yeah if you’re willing to do some sysadmining, it’s pretty easy to set up any vpn supporting openvpn or wireguard. Set the default route to be over the ISP interface, and then direct a list of known IP ranges over the vpn interface.

Are 12+ hours of intense work realistic on those devices?

Just to add, image hosting for lemmy servers is also an issue already. Afaik they aren’t federated because even the occasional image will significantly increase the amount of storage required on instances.

I think when Microsoft said Windows 10 was the last version, they were serious about it. And they kept it up for a pretty long time too. I think windows 11 happened only because some marketing person wanted to be able to pitch a new version, and a UX refresh was already being implemented.
