Put poison in the food that’s ok

This is something new they’re testing primarily in EU. There are plans to separate the premium into tiers and one tier will have ads. Even in the US, there are currently ads in your home feed such as product placement videos. When I contacted support about this, they told me they knew they were ads, it’s just that it does not interfere with watching videos. Disgusting fucking company.

You’d be surprised to see how many common libraries have vulnerabilities every week.

Start with the basics:

  • Harden SSH by only allowing public key authentication and use strong keys to authenticate instead of passwords.
  • Setup fail2ban (lots of online resources, check Linode guides) to block malicious IPs temporarily.
  • If the data you store is something only you should see, then it should not ever be connected to the internet, airgap wherever possible.
  • And finally, keep your shit updated.

Powerful people. People who have the money and the power are corrupt EVERYWHERE. Yet we ignore this and move on and pay and pay and pay.

You talk as if it is yet to happen.

I heavily use both platforms, whatever I talk about or wherever I go, I see targeted ads. When I speak about brand X, I immediately see ads for it both in ios and android. Plus every device mic is being listened to all the time, advertising agencies are your proof. Sure android devices collect more data in practice, however the data that’s not being collected by ios can be inferred from the data that’s already been collected. Do you really believe a company when they say their devices are made to ensure your privacy? Google literally says the same thing on their privacy policies ;) it’s all legal mumbo jumbo that doesn’t mean what it’s supposed to.

Magisk can bypass most of those issues. Might as well root if you’re using a custom rom.

[–] bokherif@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

It’s firmware, hence why the word ROM stuck. Once you flash the firmware to specific partitions, after the boot you can no longer modify it, unless you have root too. Technically nothing is ROM, there is always a way :).

The data collection happens on both ends. Apple only lies that it is about privacy and whatnot. Gives you a false sense of safety.

Was recently browsing Reddit and noticed a new type of ad which pops up in between comments now. It used to be a few ads in between posts and you would get an ad as the top comment when you click on a post, but now they’re injecting ads in between comments when you are even scrolling comments lol. When do you think this will start having an effect on regular people? Do you think the enshittification will slow down or come to a halt if these companies start losing revenue due to lost customer base?
