Actually, yeah. It's pretty obvious when you put it in those terms.
I was just hoping that "I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy" would have more inertia.

We needed a new X with some of the archaic crap removed. I.e. no one needs X primitives anymore, everything is its own raster now (or whatever it's called).
Evolving X would have given us incremental improvements over time... Eventually resulting in something like Wayland.
So much of that is PDP-11 baggage or derived from it.
Or more generally Very Small Disk baggage.
What we wanted: Wayland.

From memory, the lasgun-shield explosion is unpredictable and proportional to the size of the shield. So, a personal shield could produce a relatively small explosion, a house shield would produce a cataclysmic explosion.
