An APS-C with kit lens would probably still smoke any smartphone.

The funny part is it often comes from them taking pictures, not liking them, but not knowing how to troubleshoot. If they just posted the photos they were disappointed in and asked for feedback it'd be infinitely easier to help them.
I've just been using Facebook Events. Parades, Old Home Days, Touch-A-Trucks, concerts in the park, etc.
But yeah, def email a privately owned venue. They should have a media guide.
Idk I guess they'd just want something with good stabilization, good autofocus for faces, and good lowlight performance for night shooting.
