Had to scroll way too much to find this comment.

Seriously people, just try to scroll your app drawer after turning off 120Hz. It's jitter as far as the eye can see.

Java dev, running opensuse Tumbleweed with KDE.

IntelliJ IDEA, maven, git, postman

Kate for quick edits and note taking works very well

Konsole is my terminal of choice

Teams for Linux because I have to

docker on the command line because there's no docker desktop for Linux. There is for windows and MacOS tho, although Linux is literally the thing where it runs on the kernel and whose concepts the whole thing is based upon. Fuck them.

Kind of sad to see still lack (for Linux in general) of apps that are often used in companies. E.g. Teams and docker desktop

git repo

A bash script

apt get install

Same with flatpak

Keep updated. Done.

It's not super complex, it only reinstalls a bunch of apps via zypper and flatpak, opi codecs, some python app I need for OCR'ing stuff I scan, some minor firewall config (to allow Chromecast) and some bashrc/oh my bash config.

I think that's all

I literally reinstalled my Linux distro yesterday and was up&running with the same apps within half an hour, tops.

Just launched a script and it took care of everything. And half an hour is a long time, only cause my DSL is crap.

OP I would drop the "spoiled" part and keep only the "too used to it" 😉

I have put my dad on Kubuntu. Don't like anything *buntu, personally, but I have to admit it's quite stable and with sane defaults. He hasn't complained ever since and support calls dropped considerably. He spends most of the time in Firefox anyways, where I've added ublock.

The problem with Windows was, he'd occasionally browse the web with Edge by mistake (or because MS forces it down your throat), and as soon as an 80+ y.o. browses the web without ad blocking, getting a virus is just a matter of time.

All this is to say that I agree with the fact that preinstalled is key. I wish that more effort was focused on fewer distros and I feel that so much talent and energies are being lost in marginal projects.

But many people do this for passion and it's of course their choice to decide where to contribute, or whether to spin up a brand new distro entirely, can't judge them for that. I'm just observing that those energies could be better used to smoothen some rough edges on more popular distros to make them even more appealing to OEMs and convince them to ship those on their hardware.

Advice? Sure, setup timeshift backups.

Or if possible, switch to btrfs and install snapper + the grub integration. Will make it possible to go back to a previous state even from grub.

Not if you mess up grub tho, then you're screwed.

This resonates so much with me.

I had a similar experience with dongles, but also with some hardware like screwdriver kits.

It seems like the amount of choice we get nowadays is inversely proportional to the quality of the products.

It can become excruciating to shop for the most basic items on Amazon, because most of them are just cheap shit.

That's the price you pay for relocating so much stuff.

28.8k, can't remember the brand. 33.6 later on, and then finally a 56k, such a big upgrade!

Then I got 4/7/20/1000 broadband.

I have a somewhat related question: is is possible to help the infrastructure by providing a node to host an existing instance?

I don't wanna have to create and maintain/moderate my own, but would be willing to donate some power and bandwidth to the platform in order to improve performance/geographic distribution etc by having a replica node for an instance/instances of choice.

Thanks

I had planned to leave reddit by end of June already, and have uninstalled Infinity from my phone a couple of days ago.

But man, this piece of news makes me wish I could do even more to boycott the platform. They are nuts. Enjoy the failure 😉
