There is a journalistic shorthand at work here, "brief illness" usually means something discovered too late to treat, RIP Sir.
While not a renaissance fair exactly, there is a jousting tournament in Leeds Castle in Kent once or twice a year. It's a lot of fun with armour, swords, horses, the whole shebang.
Plenty of war around too..

If you are old enought to remember this show, you now make noises when you sit down. As a ten year old, this was the coolest truck on TV, the trailer would split open from the top and there was a helicopter hidden inside.
