It's only $5k and a bit of time so ask yourself if it's really worth getting a lawyer and suing him. Your rights totally depend on the contract you signed so nobody here can really say without looking at that. Definitely don't work with him again. And next time do proper due diligence about any partner or startup (including requesting docs and financials if appropriate). Consider it a lesson learned.

Unfortunately I think it's just going to get worse as people can just use AI enhanced pics that add various clothes and backgrounds for profile pics, holiday cards, etc etc. Sure they aren't perfect yet but improving all the time. So against this competition, you'd really need to seek out a higher end segment than just talking shots of regular people. Need to focus instead on where the pics are used for higher value things like advertising, although even here there is competition coming from AI. But at least a bit more resistant market at the high end.

Nothing new about copying business models from another country and bringing that back home. This probably happened in Roman times! More recently see the development of Japan after WWII. Many other examples. Chinese entrepreneurs copied the Silicon Valley model 20-25 years ago (of course now they have their own approach to tech sector).

Are you also rich? If so, then it's quite easy.
