I took a beginners workshop with a camera club as a review (been away from photography for 30 years) and wouldn't you know one of the instructors made that comment. There were several of us that called BS.

Charge something, call it friends and family discount. If you don't, consider whether you're comfortable declining others if word gets around the office that you do family portraits for free and everybody wants one.
If you have assembled the pictures into an audio-visual file, or have a structured talk to present, many seniors' homes love to have someone come in and give photography shows, especially travel.
