There's no such thing as traveling while dribbling. So as long as he didn't pick up his dribble yet, it literally doesn't matter at all what kind of steps he takes.
I used to rep the Nuggets cuz of Melo. One time against the Pistons they were up 3 with under 2 seconds left, had the ball, and just needed to inbound it at midcourt.
The inbound pass goes off Melos hand, Rasheed Wallace grabs it, throws up a shot from behind half court near the sideline, and it banks in to tie the game and we lose in OT.
