There may be an age or generational explanation for this, but I especially notice this behavior on Reddit while not nearly as much here on Lemmy (though maybe that's also a mater of implementation).

It seems many are so quick to assert overly-confident positions, but then hit-and-run with some smarmy remark at even the slightest challenge, then quickly block. Like, not even crazy stuff. Just basic, civil disagreements. I can pretty well predict when it will happen, and it always feels like such a petty ego-sparing fingers-in-ears denial thing to do, and to me if anything shows they were not very confident in their views being challenged.

I think I've only blocked a handful of people over a decade who were actively spamming, stalking, or spewing extremely hateful rhetoric and I just reported them simultaneously. You have to cross a pretty extreme and irrational line for me to do that.

The reason I ask is to see if I'm missing something; to better understand the mindset of those who do.

WASHINGTON, Sept 17 (Reuters) - FBI Director Kash Patel will face a U.S. House of Representatives panel on Wednesday for a second day of questioning by lawmakers, who are expected to focus on his handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.

Patel broadly defended his seven-month tenure as head of the FBI and his handling of the Epstein probe during a Senate committee hearing on Tuesday, pushing back against Democrats who criticized his leadership of the most prominent U.S. law enforcement agency.

Before anyone thinks I'm talking about the new Decky plugin: no, that's not what this is about.

I'm trying to get universal FSR up and running on my deck. I've looked up several guides like this one, but no matter what I do the FSR option won't show up.

To me it looks like a software update changed how the settings work, and none of the guides have been updated to reflect that.

Does anyone know how get it up and running? I've been trying for hours with no luck.

Hello, am looking for a recommendation for a semi burner phone for travel. Features I would like to have are: decent vendor support (that is, software updates), relatively inexpensive (cheap enough so that if it gets stolen or confiscated by porcine law enforcement I won’t be too sad) but nice enough to keep as a daily driver, physical SIM card, ok camera for travel photos. I am currently leaning towards the Pixel 9a but at $499 USD that is pushing a bit against affordability. Any suggestions?

i'm unbothered and frankly, glad, that transphobia appears to be a primary reason. in what way does that cheapen or negatively change the morality of the act? the demonizing and dehumanizing of people like me is responsible for the deaths of people like me. being turned into a national boogeyman has made it more unsafe for millions and millions of americans, many who are cisgender women trying to use the bathroom, and one of the biggest voices responsible for legitimizing it all is now gone and the person who did it did so to reduce direct harm to trans people. it is a calculable net positive for us all. anything resulting from this act as retribution isn't a fault of the action if the action is just. that would be to cede ground to unreasonable voices. blame the minds of those who respond to it with their own violence and their reasons for doing so.

preventing further widespread national harm and death by eliminating the source of the spread is a good thing and if the person who did it ended up doing it because of the decedent's own words and positions then so the fuck what? they were murderous positions to spread and encourage. words are not simply words; opinions are not merely statements of thought. you should face consequences for stochastically stoking the flames of fascism. using bigotry to take advantage of poor people who are disenfranchised and uneducated is despicable, it is ghastly, it is unforgivable. my identity is not a threat to anyone. protecting me is not murder, it is self-defense.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously agreed to occupy two different houses at the same time as his "principal residence," Bloomberg News reported, an agreement similar to one President Donald Trump has called mortgage fraud in his unprecedented bid to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.

    Hello all,

I am currently looking for a privacy respecting alternative for the medication tracking app I currently use. Apple's native health app seems to be decent privacy wise, but it lacks the ability to input my current capsule inventory and set a reminder at a certain amount of pills so I can refill them on time. (I should also note that I have an older phone so I'm running iOS 18.6? I'm not sure if the app has changed on iOS 26.)

Thanks for reading and I look forward to your recommendations. ^-^
