Hello everyone!

I've just released the first version of Eternity (after changing the name from Infinity for Lemmy). It's been long overdue, but I wanted to finish a few features before this update. This release includes various fixes and new features, such as:

  • Blocking users/communities

  • List blocked users/communities

  • Separate up/down votes (can be disabled in the settings)

  • Private messages

  • Content reporting

  • New themes (including a new default one!)

  • Fixed various crashes.

And a huge thank you to everyone who provided feedback, translated the app, or contributed in any form during the testing phases of this release. Your insights and suggestions were invaluable in making Eternity better for all users. I'll continue to gather feedback and make improvements in the coming updates, so please don't hesitate to reach out with any further thoughts or issues you might encounter. Your support and engagement mean the world to me! Happy browsing!

Hello! I'm trying to make google maps go work on my android smartphone. Google maps go is basically a wrapper of the website, that should provide navigation feature with another app called "navigator for Google maps". I have both installed, but when I click on "navigate in app", the link "maps.app.goo.gl/somethingverylong" is redirected to the play store website instead of being opened with the navigator app. Both apps have all permissions granted. What am I doing wrong?

Bonus question: do I really need the google maps go app or is it also possible to redirect to the navigator app from the browser?
Bonus question #2: would the navigator app work without google play services, on a degoogled rom?

Thanks in advance!

I recently discovered F(x)tec Pro1 X, Cosmo Communicator and the upcoming Astro Slide. Anyone having these devices? Wondering how it performs, how battery life, how the keyboard.

I know about supply issues, but I saw a few options on e-Bay.

Also looks like only F(x)tec Pro1 X supported by LineageOS.

I know it's very specific, lol. But my Samsung S8 is basically just a portabel 4G modem for me now. Since the screen is cracked and I don't want to spend money on that old phone. I usually access the phone to scrcpy, it works but since the screen is unuseable, I can no longer give adb access to another devices.

So I just want to know whether is it posible to give it some short of webui that I can access to do basic stuff like turning hotspot on or off, etc.

My mother uses a prepaid phone plan where mobile data usage is charged by the megabyte. It is currently not cost-effective to switch to a monthly fixed-cost subscription plan.

  • When she is at home, she should:
    • Switch off mobile data.
    • Switch on WiFi (because her home WiFi has a fixed monthly cost).
  • When she is outside home, she should:
    • Switch on mobile data (so that others can contact her using messaging apps such as Signal and WhatsApp).
    • Switch off WiFi (to conserve battery).

The problem: she often forgets to do the above. Sometimes she leaves home without switching on mobile data. Sometimes she accidentally uses lots of mobile data when at home.

Is there an app that can automatically switch on/off mobile data and WiFi based on the phone’s location? Location should be detected based on all the following data: latitude/longitude coordinates (if location is enabled on phone), WiFi networks in range (if WiFi is enabled on phone), and cell tower signals (if airplane mode is not on).

We would strongly prefer to use a privacy-respecting open source app for this. Phone: Samsung Galaxy A series. OS: Android 13.

Similar to the very random Share suggestions this has been a pet peeve of mine for ever: How in god's name does Android decide which 3 devices to display in this screen? Two of those I have not connected to in ages and one of those only maybe once or twice ever. Is there any way to change this? I would so love to have my most used devices there to save me a click and searching through the long list of saved devices. Any ideas? If not, that's fine as well, I'm also happy to just have ranted a little.

User jAm-0 has issues getting into and out of his phone's bootloader. He attributes this to the bootloader being corrupt and wants to replace it.

jAm-0 posts "Is it possible to re-flash the stock bootloader? I believe mine is corrupt somehow. It's a bit hard to explain how it's acting without actually seeing it, but it acts sporadic and barely works half the time. For example I can't reboot into the bootloader via adb, trying to power off the phone via bootloader doesn't work, and 9/10 times I try to turn my phone on it goes right to the bootloader."

User return.of.octobot provides instructions to allow reflashing the bootloader. One of the steps is to run fastboot flashing unlock_critical, which allows the bootloader to be overwritten.

Overwriting the bootloader is the only way to hard brick most devices, and fastboot flashing unlock_critical tells Android you don't care and are willing to take the risk. Hard bricking makes a device unfixable on the software level.

return.of.octobot provides instructions, including the step of running fastboot flashing unlock_critical, without any disclaimer

jAm-0 has another question and receives responses from return.of.octobot and another user, nrage23. Again, no disclaimers are given and the word "brick" isn't even brought up.

nrage23 responds to another question with "You have to do the flashing unlock critical if you have not to flash things like bootloader, boot, and modem."

jAm-0 hard bricks their phone.

after nrage23 responds to the same question, jAm-0 responds with "Great to know, thanks for the info. Too bad my phone is hardbricked now. Wont power on. Wont connect to pc. No fastboot. No recovery. Beautiful paper weight"

Hi, I'm looking for a thin phone cover for my Nord 2. Most of the ones I've tried are bulky and sometimes change the shape of the phone in uncomfortable ways, but I still wanna use a cover to protect the phone, especially from falls.

Does anyone have tips on what I should try?

Thanks

I tried to add my Google Drive account to RCX for some folder sync, but I couldn't.

I don't know what is the "Google App Client ID" and secret. There is no information at the documentation page.

Edit: I'm so sorry, it's my fault that I didn't read "Leave blank normally" under Google App Client ID and Secret. It worked when I left it blank.

Thank you for answers.

Hey everyone!

Because of how Mastodon and Lemmy are spread across multiple domains, I made an app for Android to help make following shared fediverse links hopefully a bit easier.

Mastodon/Lemmy Redirect has support for most Mastodon and Lemmy instances, and lets you choose which client you want the links to open in, even if that client doesn't support deep linking. It needs some initial setup because Android is very much not built for one app to have so many deep link domains specified, but it should be easy on Android 11 and later.

Both variants are free and open source and there's support for a bunch of clients already. I'd love to hear your feedback on behavior/UI/new clients/whatever.

Right now, downloads are available through the GitHub releases tab. I may put the apps on the Play Store, but I don't think they'll be happy about all the deep link domains.

Let me know if this isn't a good place to post this and I'll remove it.

I was up late last night and we know how that goes - rabbit holes. This time I was trying to find some ways to make my phone feel a little snappier and possibly eliminate the issue I was having where my recent apps button stops working until I restart the phone. On Android 13 I found that if I changed to gesture based navigation it solves the problem - recent apps can be switched to for just a small change. But the fluidity of gesture based navigation got me thinking about the animation speeds, so off I went into developer mode to play with some settings. This is where the rabbit hole begins.

(Small edit for phone!) I've only recently gotten the Sony Xperia 1IV direct from Sony, put in my TMobile SIM and have been running it the last 8 months or so. I haven't looked too much into the A13, but I made sure to do all my usual protections - disable Facebook and whatever other bloatware comes preinstalled. I saw a category to see a list of running services and there's some pretty innocuous ones - wireless charging service, accubattery, google, KDE connect, Vanced MicroG and Meta Services. It just looked like an RSS feed with a notification icon, really and I didn't think much of it.

Well with (edit for clarity) Vanced being dead me not liking ReVanced as much (end edit) and should have switched to LibreTube much sooner, I was trying to find where and how to uninstall MicroG. I came across my active processes again and I remembered about Meta, did a little digging (and I mean little) and saw that many Android phones come with a Meta App Manager and tracking service that runs automatically in the background, whether or not you have their apps installed/disabled. We all knew about bloatware coming preinstalled, but this was the first I'd come across full on background services using data and RAM (minute as they may be).

So I thought I'd share. It's simple, but here we are. To find them (in Android 13)

Android Settings > Apps > See All Apps > top corner Show System

Scroll down to the M's and be sure to disable background data, clear cache and storage, and disable these 3 Meta services.

And if you're curious to see your Running Services, enable developer mode, navigate to it and it's the 8th option, right under "OEM unlocking". Handy for finding sneaky apps.

While I don't use Facebook on my phone (app wrapper), I do use Instagram and I've noticed zero issues with the app. Almost like the tracking is completely unnecessary for the user experience and its removal breaks nothing! But obligatory YMMV and do this at your own risk etc. The risk is likely that Facebook wont serve you ads as well, the horror.

Anyway, I thought I was up to date on everything that needs to be done to debloat a phone, but I found some more that I've yet to see any mentions or guides for until after I started researching what and why Meta Services was running on my phone. I thought I'd share since I'm tech savvy and try to stay up to date, so if I feel this way then there may be others who would like to know about this as well.

80% of the articles in my discover feed are so obviously clickbait i feel like I'm back on 2010 Facebook... Like "Scientists worked on a new beverage for 10 years, what they discovered will shock you" or things like "These three daily exercise will get you mean in one week". It's so obvious and low quality, does google not kind of filter it's sources for the discover page?
