Just received this turntable media cabinet from a black Friday sale and assembled it. Not bad and holds my Rega P2 just fine w/o the dust cover and supports two McIntosh MC250s on the right. Bonus, has the space directly under the turntable for records. Prior to this I had a sofa there, which made it useless if you wanted to listen to music. My wife won’t let me throw the sofa away (or at least give it away) so I moved it to the back of the room for now. Anyway, this setup allows me to position the speakers better. I will have to clean up the wiring next weekend.

I have a pair of Cornwall IV speakers in my 2-channel listening room. Amp is McIntosh MA8950 @ 200w/ch. Only have room for a single sub. I had a single REL HT/1510 Predator II on them, but I found they really don’t go below ~28-30 hertz or so (despite what they advertise), so I moved it to my theater room. I am considering a REL 212/SX. I was hoping for some constructive feedback on my proposed setup.

so I ripped more CDs last night and I was in the process of tagging them. I begin to wonder if I should actually use genre considering some album/artists represent multiple genres.

thoughts? How do you classify/organize your local music collection? Thanks

Would also love to hear about differences people have heard when using higher end amps / preamps with the rarer, and less obtainable NOS tubes.

I'm currently running a set of first issue Telefunken 7DJ8 and a set of Philips 1955 EL34 metal base in an amp. I am thinking about trying to find a set of unobtainium Siemens CCA or the like, but just not sure if they're worthwhile if I could find them.

I want to compare those albums with their digital counterparts.

Hello everyone, I'd like to tell you about my hifi journey (disclaimer : this will be a long post), because I think it might be of interest to the people of Reddit... and of the internet, as I didn't found neither here nor there exactly what I was looking for before buying. TLDR : budget monitor speakers (here the Adam Audio T7V) have unbelievable sound quality at their price point. And you should not believe anyone telling you their "directionality" hampers any hifi use, that they would not fill a living room, that their sound is not loud enough, not made to be "nice" or not enough bassy as they're made to be "flat" (aka boring, and ear-tiring), so you should prefer 2, 3 or 4 times more expensive bookshelves speakers/systems because you wouldn't be able to enjoy the monitors for casual listening in your everyday life. Anyway, to the story.

Some background information : I'm not a sound professional, just someone who likes to listen to music. And music of many genres depending of my mood, from bass-heavy electronic music and hip-hop to classical concertos and jazz, not neglecting old school rock music or modern pop. At home alone, with a few friends or partying loudly, on terrible sound systems and on good ones (I don't think everything is equal, and music is sooo much better with the latter). For many many years, I used a very old school vintage sound system, made of an Adcom preamp and amplifier (GTP 500 II + GFA 545 II for those interested), with big Beovox 4000 speakers. I used those either with proper CD player, then from the 2010s directly linked to computers and phones (no real DAC, don't recommend), then with an Advance acoustic WTX500 bluetooth DAC (do recommend if you need bluetooth and have old systems with RCA in).

The result was a pleasant all around bassy and warm sound (by no mean precise though), with more than enough power to fill the whole house. I was happy, but not everyone in the house was : this system had a huge footprint in our small living room (8x3m, so 26x10 feet). I reluctantly put it aside. And used then a small and cheap (like 40 $) bluetooth speaker bought in 2015 that I could move along with me around the house. Or OK headphones if I was alone. Massive downgrade I know ! Kids and life didn't allow me to think about it too much. Fast forward to a week ago. I finally accepted the fact that I would never (in the next years anyway) have enough space again at home for such speakers and amp, so I'd sell them. And that I liked music too much to be happy with my anemic bluetooth speaker.

My quest for better sound at an acceptable price (in the 150-300 euros range all included) began. At first, I thought I'd never be able to get my hands on anything remotely good for that low price, so I was looking into bettering my bluetooth portable speaker, setting my sights on a JBL Charge 5 for something like 130 euros (better stuff exists but the JBL was kinda praised, and seemed indestructible). Stereo was of importance to me though (I know how better it is, obviously), so maybe two of them ? 260 euros then for a movable system (not that I needed it that much), a not eco-friendly battery inside and better but not awesome sound. Then I thought : what could I get for 260 euros that could sound really way better than that without taking too much space ?

I began to look into powered speakers, the relatively small form factor being of importance to me, and the idea of individual amps tailored for each driver makes obvious technical sense. The prices of bookshelves speakers with dual amps per speaker made me renounce instantly (I mean, the cheapest ones I found were like KEFs at 700 euros used). Then to the monitor speakers ? First the small ones : JBL 305p, Yamaha HS5, Adam T5V, KRK Rockit and the likes. Not wanting an insanely ugly piece of equipment inside my living room (JBL and Rockit if I have to name names), I set my sights on either the Adam or the Yamaha. I read about them lacking bass, and even volume for my kind of room. So went for the T7V or the HS7, stretching my budget for fuller sound. I intended to buy used Yamahas for less than 350 euros, as T7V's were hard to find used where I live.

Now to the important part of this post (if anyone is still reading it) : searching all there was to read about these monitor speakers, the gist seemed mostly to be that they were very good as budget professional monitor speakers, but not so much (as per sooo many reddit responses to people on the same quest as I was) to use as general-purpose speakers because their directionality meant they couldn't fill a room with sound. They had to be carefully placed, in a treated room, to give something that would be OK. Music would be meh as soon as you were not in their very narrow sweet spot, and the sound would fade at the moment you would be away from the speakers (like more than 2-3 m). At the same time some commenters (notably in r/audiophile or r/BudgetAudiophile) said, from time to time, that they were good speakers period even if not for their intended/ideal use case. I hesitated : was I making the wrong choice thinking I was making the savvy choice ?

Then I found out that the timing was in fact great to buy new T7Vs : it never happens usually but they were massively discounted in Europe (new model coming ?). I closely missed an Amazon offer at 300 euros a pair, but I still could have them for 340 euros a pair. Black friday was closing on me though, so I pulled the trigger and bought them new instead of used HS7. And know they're here. I placed them as I would have done with bookshelves speakers, in a big bookshelf (deep and wide enough to allow them 30 cm right, left and rear), as high as my waist, on the narrow side of my living room. I added a panel of (white and flat, so invisible) sound insulation on the back and a mostly invisible pad of foam under the speaker (clearly a bit better sound than without). They're directly connected via RCA cables to my WTX500 without any volume adjustment knob. So not ideal at all.

First putting them on, I was weary of the potential hissing sound, having read about it for active speakers with class D amplifiers all around the internet. So I tested it without anything connected. I was pleasantly surprised : no volume, no sound at all, O dB, a very light hiss (audible if I was at like 20 cm of the speaker), max volume a light hiss (audible at 50 cm, so two feet). First worry gone (here in an old european house, so not state of the art electrical install). Second worry, as I didn't intend to buy anything unnecessary to stay on a budget, no more more cables than the OK RCA ones I already had, and here they zig-zagged through a NAS and my wifi router. But this made no more noise than disconnected (and the WTX 500 is blissfully silent on power with no sound, that I already knew). Second worry gone.

Now to the really interesting part, the sound itself. First the bass question : for earth-shattering bass, I'd need a subwoofer. But as standard speakers it's pretty good even compared to my massive B&O. Second, the loudness question : it's more than enough, as even at 0 dB it's quite loud, so I'll never need to push them at max volume even for a big party. Three, the sound quality : unbelievable is the word. As I read elsewhere, I'm hearing stuff in music (Flac and high bitrate mp3s via bluetooth LBC or apt-X) I didn't even know was there ! And I'm hearing it at any noise level, from a whisper to very loud, with pretty good dynamic (as in : symphonies). From Beethoven to The Prodigy, from Miles Davis to The Beatles, from Dre to Portishead, everything is magnified with this pair of T7V as long as the original mix is good.

I'm rediscovering my own music, album by album, artist by artist, and my ears are having the time of their life. No my setup is not ideal, far from it, but the speakers alone took it to a level of precision and overall quality I'd never thought I could have at home, and certainly not for this kind of budget. Contrary to so many posts I've read here and there about monitor speakers, my ears do not get tired, and the sound does not sound boring (I'd concede that I have only listened to good stuff since receiving them) in any way whatsoever. I can confirm though, about these specific monitor speakers and their ribbon tweeters, that their real highlight is in the high frequencies (and the mids to a lower extent) and they are clearly the star of the show for these T7V : bass is here and it's good but not so good as to make you cry.

So this long post is here to tell every casual listener who would be in a similar hesitation as I was, worrying to make the wrong choice with monitor speakers in your living room instead of more expensive bookshelves that you might not be able to afford period (or, god forbid, bluetooth speakers for a home setup), that you should hesitate no more and go for it. You'll thank yourself ! I understand picky listeners and music professionnals might disagree, but honestly if you just like to listen to music, I don't see how these Adam T7V (or other budget speaker monitors) couldn't be considered a huge bargain compared to consumer-grade stuff out there.

Just wondering, what are your thoughts on speakers with concrete as the cabinet material?

I am wondering why there are not many floor standing speakers made from concrete as it seems like an idea material for sound characteristics.

I came across this vinyl mix on YouTube and noticed the two hanging cube speakers on either side of the turntables. I've never seen them before and was curious if they're mass produced or maybe custom perhaps. If anyone recognizes them, I'd love to know the brand or who makes them. The design is really fascinating and I wonder what they sound like.

TLDR: I’ve got a fairly unique problem and I'm hoping you all can suggest some ideas - I'm installing a sound system in my camper van. It’s a big van, interior is 6 ft wide by 12 ft long, 6 ft high ceilings. Here’s a photo of the interior - think of it as basically a tiny studio apartment. My main issues are speaker positioning and room treatment in such a small/weird space. Any advice is very appreciated!

Speakers are the Infinity Reference 5030CX system (2x woofer, 2x tweeter, 2x crossover package) as the main/“front” speakers and a pair of Infinity Reference 5032CFX as secondary/“rear”. I have a few existing decent amps I’ll be testing out so that’s not an issue.

As for speaker positioning, the main place for listening is going to be the bench area in blue. Here’s a second photo showing what’s behind the bench - basically just the side slider door with some acoustic foam on it. As far as I can tell I more or less have two options for speaker positioning: 1) four corners approach, left in the rear and right in the front, all pointing towards the bench, or 2) “traditional” arrangement with speakers mounted on the kitchen wall facing the bench, plus the rear speakers somewhere on the bed walls/rear doors. I can’t decide between these two - the second has the benefit of soundstage if you’re sitting on the couch but then I would think that the “rear” speakers on the bed would interfere with the soundstage? Maybe set those to mono (?) The first approach/four corners style would probably require some sort of delay, plus mounting would be a royal pain in the ass, plus if you’re sitting on the bed you only get a left channel right in your face… tricky.

I’m a big believer in room treatment and I know it can absolutely make or break a setup. Unfortunately this is a very tricky one of course - obviously this is a terrible environment compared to a normal room. The van has solid hardwood floors, large 1" thick plywood walls for the bathroom, plastic wall sheeting and of course the walls are thin sheet metal. I imagine this setup is more or less what you all have nightmares about. My main ideas are to maximize absorption by throwing up a bunch of wall panels and coverings. I don't have much space for a trap or diffuser - this is a small van, space is at an extreme premium and I don't even have space for a coffee machine - but I'm willing to try to get creative if there should be a significant improvement. I could probably fit maybe two tri-traps in a corner or two. If there are any other materials or suggestions (coatings for the walls, adding weight to the plastic, etc) I am also open to changing any of that. I did already throw up some 1/2" thick PET felt hexagons on the slider door (the second photo I attached of the bench+slider, photo taken before I put up the hexagons) which will hopefully help but I heard that these aren't very effective so maybe a 1" panel would be better?

So, if you made it through all that, main questions are 1) how do I position my speakers, four corners vs "traditional" vs something else? 2) how can I maximize absorption in the tricky space I've got? 3) any other ideas for making this setup sound good using what I've got?

I’ve been doing a bunch of research and experimenting but this seems to be a real tough one. Any advice at all is very appreciated!

The Blu-Ray version is what most sites show these days (and sounds amazing), but my system is CD and vinyl only. I know the original mastering of this cycle in the 1970s was controversial. Can someone please point me to the best remastering on CD? A link would be appreciated.

(I don’t think this belongs in the Shopping and Setup Help Deck since it’s not equipment related, but please correct me if that’s wrong. I read the rules.)

What are general views on isolation feet for heavy floor standing speakers? They seem to cost a lot of money, but are they going to make a great deal of difference to warrant spending that kind of money.

Are there people that view them as an essential giving certain conditions like hardwood floors? Or are they seen as largely unnecessary?

I have recently acquired a Peachtree Nova 150 integrated amp, which contains a 9018K2M SABRE32 DAC. Currently feeding it with an old Chromecast Audio which I will be replacing with a Wiim Pro Plus if Santa is good to me.

My question is, what range/specific DAC models would represent a noticeable improvement over either the 9018K2M in the Peachtree or the TI PCM5121 in the Wiim?

In the interim (and I'll A/B test once I have the Wiim), any reason to prefer the 9018K2M over the PCM5121 (or the other way around?)

Also, why can't these things just have normal, reasonable names so I don't have to copy/paste them from the product website?

Am i taking crazy pills? "Bad Guy" came in my Hi-Fi setup and i was floored. Been listening to her top songs and its incredible. Its not typically my music type. Wow.

What other pop artists have this level of extremely interesting audio mixing?

I apologise in advance for a novice question, but I'm looking to learn and get more into audiophile equipment. My current setup is a turntable --> RIAA stage --> active speakers. My speakers (Klipsch R-15PM) actually have an integrated RIAA stage, but I bought a separate one because physical constraints forced me to place my speakers five meters from the turntable, which would be too long of a cable run for such a weak signal. So the seperate RIAA stage is feeding into the line level input for the active speakers. This setup has been working well for me, but I've been missing the opportunity to use headphones with my turntable.

I've already decided on the headphones and the headphone amp (Meze 99 Classics and Schiit Vali 2++), but I'm trying to understand how to set up the rest of the system. Does the preamp output on the Vali simply forward the signal from my RIAA stage without doing anything to it? In that case I can use the same setup as before, only adding the Vali between the RIAA and the active speakers. But if that's not the case, and the Vali actually amplifies the RIAA output to a normal preamp level, will it still be possible to feed this signal to the phono line-in for the active speakers?

To my cd experts. Will a cheap cd player like $40 work find if I'm listening with Bluetooth headphones? Or is the quality of the cd sound important no matter what?

21

I've seen people hanging up blankets and stuff on the walls to reduce echo, but would flags work the same way? Or are they too thin to absorb the sound?

22

I've been having a problem with the bass on my la scalas: it can sound uncontrolled on some songs (Mitski's "My Love All Mine" is one) and just overwhelms the room. Bought some 4-inch acoustic panels and was wondering where to place them. One of the challenges is that to get the panels behind the la scalas, i'll have to pull the speakers away from the wall at least 6 inches on both sides, which isn't ideal.

I also have some thin acoustic panels on the ceiling, which don't seem to be doing much.

Right now I have the panels propped up in various places, just to get an idea if they made a difference. They did. I'd say a 40% percent reduction in the bass problem and an overall richer, fuller sound. Which is great. But I'd like to get the bass thing under control 100%. Maybe mounting them correctly can get me there.

Might look at the triangular bass traps too, but if I can get away with just these four, that'd be great. Thanks.

I find easier to increase bass on the EqualizerAPO because I have a separate band curve. But im not sure if when rotary says "Change band 2 to adjust bass" It means I need change frequency 105hz or default , 105hz is the one on the filter.

Hi everyone, New to this community - just bought my first “big boy” system. Coming from a budget Cambridge Audio 5.1 system. I first learned of Dynaudio from my Volkswagen that I had many moons ago. Not sure if this has been posted here, but their entry level line is on sale! I bought myself what’s pictured - Emit 50 in walnut finish. Going to be pairing them with an NAD C700. So pumped!! Anyone here have experience with these?

I won't bore you all with my exact setup at this point, but it's pretty nice all in all. I have an Cambridge Audio 851n and I'm thinking of switching to Amazon Music HD from Qobuz, because the selection and music discovery on Qobuz is kind of killing my love for music atm. All I'm listening to are my own playlists and it's getting monotone and depressing. Paying extra for Roon is something I've done and wouldn't want to get back in to right now due to the cost. The Wiim Mini seems like a good idea, as I would be able to natively stream Amazon Music HD to my 851n through spdif and let the latter do the DAC duties. Pros and cons, anyone?
