This kind of shit should be illegal - its purposefully misleading consumers. Fake discounts are illegal in the U.S.

"Under federal law in the USA, it is illegal to sell a product at a discounted price if the original price was not offered to the public on a regular basis for a reasonably sustained period of time."

I hate "Retail value" too for shopping networks on television and websites and some outlet stores. Retail value then discounted and then clearance sale 75% off at outlet stores where I live and you still overpay for some no name T-Shirt or pants. QVC is so bad with retail value after watching that South Park episode I actually sat down for a full hour and watched it. They had a computer retail value $1600 for $549 or something and no computer even worth $1000 or more was that bad and I found many computers for $450 that were better. It was many years ago not gaming just a tower and mouse and keyboard I think. There also get their own custom model names and QVC only items for other things so its harder to do a direct comparison because its only listed on QVC. The whole hour it was constantly this major deals that weren't actually deals. Like their sheets I found online cheaper and other items.

I'm not from the US, but atleast in the EU the fines for fake discounts are so small that some companies make a profit with the scam and have enough capital left over to just pay the fine and continue like nothing ever happened.

Illegal for you, but not illegal for the big boys.
