How was Ubuntu able to launch like a dozen of phones back in the day?

Can we have that ? Why can't they do it now - I would buy a high end model.

? they tried to crowdfund one single model but despite the overwhelming support (raised $35 mil) it wasn't enough to actually start production

You're speaking of this timeline? There are no official Ubuntu phones as I know (pine phone is a development device and has a fork)
