Welcome to the discussion of US Politics!

Rules:

  1. Post only links to articles, Title must fairly describe link contents. If your title differs from the site’s, it should only be to add context or be more descriptive. Do not post entire articles in the body or in the comments.

Links must be to the original source, not an aggregator like Google Amp, MSN, or Yahoo.

Example:

  1. Articles must be relevant to politics. Links must be to quality and original content. Articles should be worth reading. Clickbait, stub articles, and rehosted or stolen content are not allowed. Check your source for Reliability and Bias here.
  2. Be civil, No violations of TOS. It’s OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It’s NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
  3. No memes, trolling, or low-effort comments. Reposts, misinformation, off-topic, trolling, or offensive. Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
  4. Vote based on comment quality, not agreement. This community aims to foster discussion; please reward people for putting effort into articulating their viewpoint, even if you disagree with it.
  5. No hate speech, slurs, celebrating death, advocating violence, or abusive language. This will result in a ban. Usernames containing racist, or inappropriate slurs will be banned without warning

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

That's all the rules!

Not one journalist in the entire country is capable of finding the truth about what's going on. Pathetic.

[–] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

Where's Lois Lane when ya need her?

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 5 points 15 hours ago (2 children)

Id argue they're probably trying to publish but getting hit with national security forced publication holds

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

getting hit with national security forced publication holds

....? that in itself would be news.

also what the fuck is that supposed to be, really? afaik there's no national security concerns about an old man being dead.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

They don't have to explain the hold for quite some time. Unless something leaks we wouldn't know

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

the hold

you keep referring to this like it's a thing. what is it?

I can't find anything about it.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 3 minutes ago

It's prior restraint, which is commonly mistaken to be illegal. It's not there's just a heavy presumption against it and since it's national security related the court hearings about the subject are usually closed and sealed but the discussion of the governments right to do it aren't.

New York Times v US 1971

There's also voluntary prior restraint where a publisher decides not to publish because the effects of publication don't outweigh getting shutdown under the burden of huge legal fees.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Real journalists wouldn't care.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Jail time is no fun and has a big price tag unfortunately. Though no one is stopping you from being that change.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Not my country, guy.

"Jail time is no fun." Excellent, keep giving Americans a pass on their cowardice. Couldn't possibly put yourself at risk or sacrifice anything for your country and the FREEDOM you've been shitty about for a century or so.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

You don't seem to understand how this works. You try to publish they shut you down and put you in prison and your story still didn't see daylight you're just some dude in prison likely in solitary.

You're not wrong but being shitty doesn't change the fact they would end up in jail and accomplish nothing, no one here seems to be giving Americans a pass we're just aware you have to pick your fights.

[–] gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 49 minutes ago (1 children)

This isn't the 1800s anymore, you post online and people WILL see it

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 14 minutes ago

No. If they know who you are you aren't posting. They control the pipeline, if they had no idea what was going to happen that might apply it just doesn't in this case.

[–] WizardofFrobozz@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago) (1 children)

Right. It's impossible to get information into the public's hands.

Journalism exists for no more important reason than to be a check on powerful, dangerous people. Third degree burns are also “no fun,” but firefighters exist.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 1 points 11 minutes ago

No, it's impractical to do so without escaping the country or going to prison.

Your example makes no sense, putting out fires is legal, nonpolitical, encouraged and as far as I'm aware there's no time place manner limitations on it either.

[–] motruck@lemmy.zip 4 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Why is that, it seems crazy? Where the fuck is Jon Stewart now hounding McConnell to do the right thing in person?

[–] ohulancutash@feddit.uk 8 points 16 hours ago (3 children)

When americans confuse their comedians for journalists I think that illustrates the problem.

[–] motruck@lemmy.zip 3 points 9 hours ago

"When Americans confuse "

When folks from the EU think they are somehow different cause mentally they don't think they are responsible for all the shit countries in their union but the Americans are responsible for all the shit states in theirs.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 4 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Comedians are the only ones who do any real journalism anymore.

[–] Soup@lemmy.world 7 points 14 hours ago

Their comedians are often more willing than their journalists are to actually speak the truth. Aa a Canadian, I can’t even judge them for that because it’s rough up here, too.
