Dude is about to shoot himself, Death turns up to collect him but has his hood down or something, the guy freaks out and shoots Death instead and has to take his place, right?
I read that 30+ years ago burning through my town library's small sci-fi/fantasy section.
Yes, that's the one. "On a Pale Horse" is the first book in the series, and the one about Death. In the books, magic and science coexist and aspects of reality like War, Time, Death, etc are all offices that people hold.
The whole Incarnations of Immortality series is one of my favorites, but it's been a bit since I've read them.
