Answering this question makes it easy for the cop to write it in his report that you admitted guilt.

[–] cRazi_man@europe.pub 59 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I know someone who said he has no idea what his speed was. When the cop was pressing harder and harder to get him to accept he asked "do you have a calibrated speed gun in your car". The cop admitted he didn't and the guy said "this conversation is over then", and the cop let him drive off.

In my youth (look, this was like a decade ago, I don't speed much these days), I had a nice car with superb high-speed stability and a big engine (by my standards at the time anyway). It was a super beautiful spring evening, I'd just put on my grippy summer tires and the road was damn near empty. So I was cruising at 120 km/h and decided to overtake a bus going 90. Well it wasn't very difficult to go from 120 to 180 in just a few seconds and then I coasted back to a more sane speed fairly quickly.

So when I got pulled over and the cop asked me if I knew how fast I was going, I said "I don't know the exact number, I was looking at the road not the speedometer, could you tell me?" and was told they caught me at 120 km/h. Nearly sighed out in relief at that point.

Someone else posted these recently. Always a good reminder:

Shut the fuck up Friday

Don't talk to the police

They get posted in nearly every one of these discussions.

As they should!

I felt like I was being a giant asshole but I got off the same way. Cop was trying to make me admit to driving fast. I said I wasn’t and asked what they clocked me at. They said they didn’t get me with the radar gun. I said “ok,” and just stared at her.

One time a cop lied that he caught be going 94 in a 65. I said “I was not going 94. I’ve never gone 94 in my life.” And he said “Are you saying that wasn’t you?” “I don’t know what you recorded but I wasn’t going 94.” So he goes and sits in his car for a while pretending to check his tapes, then comes back and says “You are definitely the one I recorded.” Conveniently ignoring what I actually said.

Eventually he dropped the speed he was claiming down to like 70 and my dumbass then-21 year old self was like “Oh OK, yeah I was totally going 70, just not 94.” and he handed me a ticket.

I’m still mad about it.

I think that the way to settle a dispute like this isn't by shouting over the cop. Is it satisfying? I'm sure. Good idea? Never.

It's on them to prove the speeding happened, and if they can't back it up in court, it's a quick dismiss.

"Obviously not fast enough since you caught up with me"

I used to watch this British show called Police Interceptors. The narrator loved talking about how the officers drive Subaru Imprezas and Mitsubishi Evo 9s/10s, and that their top speed is 155mph. My thought was always "So get a car that goes faster than 155, got it"

I dont even need a damned car lol

[–] boonhet@sopuli.xyz 2 points 8 hours ago

Most German cars of the 00s have been limited to 155 mph or 250 km/h since about the 90s or 00s. Assuming they've got power to go faster, that is.

They're not super difficult to unlock I hear. Never needed it myself so I've never done it, but if I was the kind to need to run away from police cars limited to 155, well... An unlimited 3 liter diesel without any mods to increase power can do a bit over 155. One with a few supporting mods and a remap can likely do near or over 200 on a budget. If gearing allows. In a car that still look and sounds like your ol' family tractorwagon. You don't need to get an RS6 or an M5.

Of course if your car chase is going to last several hours or something, you probably don't want to do it in a 20 year old wagon you've modded in your own garage. But for a highway getaway car that's also stealthy, that's what I'd recommend. 5 series, A6, or E-Class wagon, 3 liter diesel (okay, the OM642 is not great - recommend an older 3.2 OM648 instead if you want to push big power).

The UK did have an issue with a lotus Carlton that did a bit more than that. I think the cop cars were slower at the time as well.

Fantastic. I watched a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Johnny Knoxville called The Last Stand (loved it, I consider it a hidden gem) and their purpose was to stop a supercar that even a chopper couldn't follow
