I actually just filled out an application on indeed because I figured why not. The questions are getting strange. It's not a government job, no clearance required, so why are you asking if I'm a citizen of Syria?

Guessing it was for a work from home gig? Companies have been getting in hot water recently for unwittingly hiring people from countries like North Korea and inadvertently breaking US sanctions by paying them.

This is probably just a way for companies to claim in good faith that they were attempting to do some sort of screening to prevent it .

I haven't worked for a company that hasn't done a background check. How on earth would place of birth not show up? Hell even the movie theater I applied to in 2006 did a background check.

I would have to guess that they use stolen identities. Also a lot of the companies that claim they are running background checks for employees often do not. Usually the threat of doing so will weed out people, and they don't tend to be cheap.

These days I have to check online on the status of them and what not. Years ago I'm sure a lot of companies may have just lied like your saying because how would you know. That said in 2020 I changed my address on something to Sofi stadium because I was being dumb and had paid something off I thought but they contacted me years later in 2020 saying I owed them $280 or something. Turns out I sent them the amount I had owed the month prior, so the interest that accrued over the month left a balance of like $25 or something and they just let it sit and add late fees until that collection company called me. Being stubborn I asked them if I could pay the $25 and call it even, they said no so I hung up and changed the address on the account because California has more protections about harassing people.

Sure enough all my background checks now have a section where the county that Inglewood is in has to state I don't have a criminal record there. I've never even been to LA, let alone lived there.. oops.

even walmart/amazon that originally en masse did background checks on everyone.
