This is why I think we need a split award. MLB has the Cy Young for the best pitcher, and the MVP for every other position. You can win both in the same year as a pitcher, but you have to hit an even higher standard for that. So whether it’s Most Outstanding Quarterback or “winning the Montana Award” or whatever, you get a designated QB award and open up MVP to WRs, RBs, DBs, Dlinemen, hell maybe even an olineman if somebody has that crazy a season. And doing it like that wouldn’t even force you to get rid of OPotY or DPotY either, so why not?

That’s what they basically currently do. Qbs offensive players and defensive players all have their own award it just hasn’t been explicitly stated about mvp

except its not really that uncommon for QBs to win OPOY. Almost half (20/50 winners since it was created in '72) of the OPOYs have been QBs

But a lot of the times it’s the same QB who wins MVP. If you simply didn’t allow voting for the same guy at both OPOY and MVP I think that’d more or less fix it.

eh you still get seasons like '11 where OPOY is just MVP Runner Up, giving Brees the OPOY cause in any other year his season would be worthy of MVP, he just happened to have it in a historic season by Rodgers

Yeah but that’s pretty rare in general, it’s much more common where the MVP is also awarded OPOY which is stupid.
