The last defensive player to win MVP literally changed how the game was played. As good as Myles is, it's just not how things work in today's NFL.

[–] emmasdad01@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s just not going to happen.

[–] DryDefenderRS@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (20 children)

2009, 2012, and 2014 kind of established that defenders cant get it anymore.

At least its looking like true QB only now, rather than RB being the only non-QB exception.

Mahomes threw for 50 something TDs that year as a second year starter. He was going to win that award no matter how good a defensive player was

[–] DrBigChicken@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Weren’t they a below average defense in 2018?

[–] srgntalpowell@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (16 children)

The reason it’s a discussion this year is the lack of elite QB play. It’s not comparable to those seasons

[–] Flashy-Mcfoxtrot@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (22 children)

There has been 3 instances in over 60 years where it hasn’t been a QB or RB that won the award, and one of those is a kicker in a strike season. Nfl has almost effectively phased out the workhorse RB with all their rule changes towards the passing game for the past 25 years, so it is effectively only QB that can win it now. You can probably find comparable seasons amongst those 65 years.

A lot of this could be redundant, if American sports would just have an award called “player of the year/season” instead.

See I think JJ losing the MVP in 2012 and 2014 is kind of looked back upon now as missed opportunities, maybe it’s just the kind of media I follow but I think if they had to do it over again a lot of people would have changed their votes.

Also there’s never quite been a season like this where the progress of defenses have been so stark, and the MVP field from the QB position has been so bad. The story of the season is that defenses finally stepped up to the plate after years of what seemed like exponential growth on offense, and Garrett is the best defensive player in the league on the best defense in the league

[–] jfresh42@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

According to pro football JJ wasn’t even the most valuable defender that year (Sherman). It’s pretty hard to argue against a RB that came within 9 yards of breaking the single season rushing record while also helping his team win 7 more games.

Rodgers was more valuable in 2014 than JJ Watt. He did more for his team to win games

[–] Brett_Hundley@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Unbelievable to me that people think JJ should have been MVP on a team that didn’t make the playoffs.

[–] vin1223@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

A lot of people have this thing about the mvp where they don’t care about the valuable part of the award and therefore don’t care if the guys team misses the playoffs it’s weird

2014 Rodgers deserved it over Watt, that was an insane season he put up. Much better season than any qb in the league right now is having

[–] The-Implication-0@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Yeah it’s not about how good the defensive player was necessarily in a given year. It’s the combination of a lack of clear cut number 1 QB + insane defensive player this year.

[–] agk927@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He was basically the clear cut best qb and had the upper hand over Romo

The only non-QB that makes any sense this year is McCaffrey, and even so I don't think he should get it. QB is such an inherently valuable position that non-QBs winning almost doesn't make any sense. Hell, at least half of the QBs in the league are more important to their team succeeding than any one defensive player could ever be.

[–] UsernameChallenged@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (6 children)

MVP really needs to be split between QBs and everyone else.

[–] soupcansam21@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Most Outstanding Player Award

[–] jshultz5259@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

MVQB isn't a bad idea.

Only in the sense that I roll my eyes at most of these awards anyway.

[–] Coop718@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Like OPOY and DPOY?

I vote we give Garrett MVP + DaRon Bland DPOY, no bias

[–] Call_Em_Skippies@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (4 children)

After his pick six last night I'm worried Myles will miss another DPOY. Besides the INTs, has Bland been a shut down corner?

[–] soupcansam21@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Entering the game against Washington, he'd allowed more than 50 yards just once all season. 23 catches on 41 targets, 230 yards and 1 TD (that dime from Hurts to Devonta). Funnily enough, I think he allowed a decent amount of yards vs. the Commanders. (these are the Pro Football Reference numbers)

[–] Keeting@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Was the PFF #1 ranked CB I believe going into last night

Dak if Daron doesn’t get another defensive TD. Gilmore won dpoy with 6 ints and two tds. Daron is already at 7 and 5 tds and best grade against among CBs with over 50 snaps

[–] DiseaseRidden@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Gilmore didn't win that DPOY because of his picks. He won it because he'd shut down half of the field. It takes a lot for a cb to win DPOY.

[–] EthanSpears@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don't know man. Breaking longstanding NFL records with 6 games left in a season feels like a lot.

[–] Tomatillo_Thick@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (6 children)

That’s right NFL QBs, Daron Bland is not a shutdown corner. Please keep throwing his way. Thank you.

Bland’s cover stats are also great and Micah leads the league in pressures too btw

Only QBs can, mathematically, be MVPs

[–] LivingxLegend8@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

LOL 😂

No way.

Lamar Jackson is the MVP.

[–] GoalLineStand@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (2 children)

LJ isn’t even a top 5 candidate

[–] xenophonthethird@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Much as I love Garrett, a defensive player MVP is nearly impossible. Argument can be made, but it'll still go to a QB, as QBs are the most valuable position.

[–] tripdawg15@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (4 children)

If jj watt didn't win it that one year he was crazy good on defense and was catching tds as a tight end then myles has no shot.

[–] agk927@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (3 children)

No qb this season, is better than 2014 Rodgers, Rodgers deserved it that year because he put up insane numbers and won 12 games. Watt only won 9

The MVP field in 2012 and 2014 wasn’t nearly this bad

[–] Brett_Hundley@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

He didn’t make the playoffs that’s why he didn’t win it

I don’t even know that he has a shot at defensive MVP this year. Imagine if DaRon Bland somehow manages another pick 6. It would have to be him. It probably should be him right now.

We all know that MVP is a QB award now. He’d have to at least break TJ and Strahan’s sack record to be in league MVP conversation

This is why I think we need a split award. MLB has the Cy Young for the best pitcher, and the MVP for every other position. You can win both in the same year as a pitcher, but you have to hit an even higher standard for that. So whether it’s Most Outstanding Quarterback or “winning the Montana Award” or whatever, you get a designated QB award and open up MVP to WRs, RBs, DBs, Dlinemen, hell maybe even an olineman if somebody has that crazy a season. And doing it like that wouldn’t even force you to get rid of OPotY or DPotY either, so why not?

Just want to say I think we’re going a little overboard on how “bad” the qb play has been this year. I know this is going to seem like me being a homer, but I’m only using tua because I know his stats off hand. I’m pretty sure Josh Allen for example is going to end up with similar numbers. Tua is on pace to end just under 5,000 yards (4987), 70% completion percentage, 36 tds to 13.6 int. Is that the best season in nfl history? No. But this year probably wins mvp in a few seasons over the last 15 years

If they make the playoffs, I 100% agree. If not Garrett then it should be Tyreek

[–] QuirkyScorpio29@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

We all know this won't happen..before they even think of giving it to a defensive player...they will see if they can get a WR ( Hill) or an RB (CMC) the award.

In most cases, the QB with the better stats between the 1 seeded teams in either conference will take the award...with a caveat for this particular season.

Right now it would be Hurts vs Lamar for MVP...so Lamar would likely be favourite in this scenario with the narrative advantage of having a worse roster on paper.

If KC gets the one seed with their WR troubles...even with a good defense...Mahomes will have the "He has no WRs but is the 1 seed anyway" narrative to play with.

If we (SF) somehow get the 1 seed...then the AFC QB 1 seed will get the award by default coz Purdy will NEVER be taken seriously for MVP consideration because of multiple BS reasons....CMC is a RB so that would be used against him too in this H2H.

The actual MVP picture this season from a performance standpoint should include Garrett, TJ Watt,, CMC, CJ Stroud, Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy. I excluded Tua and Dak for lack of big game performances of the others..Hurts has not played like a top 5 QB by any real stat or even the eye test.

[–] onetime2121@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

have the argument and then give it to a qb

[–] Steelers7589@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (6 children)

I don’t understand why CMC isn’t getting more consideration. Currently 8th and he’s having a better year than any of the QBs.

That's a weird way to spell DaRon Bland
