Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

If they could draw or make music, they wouldn't need a robot to do it, and they clearly want to but don't have the skills.

Creating a piece of art myself is different than enjoying someone else's creation. There's a place for both. Lots of respect for, say, professional musicians. They have natural skills and years of hard work that I don't and no amount of hobbying will get me close to them. But I still find satisfaction in twiddling around on a piano and writing my own tunes. AI helping people enjoy their hobby more is a good application, IMO.

Contrast that with people using it to "side-hustle" and try to scrape up some easy dollars by flooding the world with passionless slop, that's a different thing.

No amount of AI in the creation of music is good. Learn how to not use it.

I respectfully disagree and think hobbies are for enjoyment. If someone makes music for personal enjoyment with the help of AI tools, good for them. If another person finds joy in making "real" music without AI assist, good for them too.

So long as they know they’re making artificial music.

Real art comes from a person’s desire to connect with the world around them, or to try and express what they can’t using words. Either way, art is entirely human. AI makes sounds and images. It’s not art.

There’s a reason why AI is called artificial.

We finally have a proper rigid definition for what art is !

Why didn't anyone think of drawing the line in the sand before? I can't believe you are the first, it seems so simple now that you said it.

The definition of art is insanely subjective and has been debated through out history.

Slapping a definition on it just because it suits you does nothing except show that you have no idea what art is.

The definition of art doesn’t include clankers.

"The definition of art doesn't include cameras"

Fucking pathetic. Blocked.

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Wow. Now that right there. That's art.

Ya, I enjoy playing guitar and making little finger picking riffs. I also enjoyed using music gen to mix different styles together and writing lyrics for them (eventually, it gets a bit old though).

I never even considered uploading those songs and sharing them, nor starting to churn out slop to make 5 bucks on Spotify. It's legit asshole behavior imo. Spotify itself makes it hard enough to make money when you are a proper musician, I'm guessing it's even harder now.

Ai isn't their hobby

This... this is the reasonable course that's shunned by our divisive culture nowadays. I personally don't have the time or the space, but I do have a computer, so I use what tools I have. Local models ftw

[–] Vanth@reddthat.com 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'll take my downvotes now 😞

Jk, I'm on an instance that disables downvotes. Meaning folks have to write coherent comments for me to be aware they think I'm dumb/wrong/eeeeevil.

I could see tinkering with local models being a very satisfying hobby. I've always been curious about how accurate they can get on sentiment. E.g., a southern US woman saying "bless your heart" can have implied condescension while other regions it may be more of a straightforward good-faith comment; how and how well does a model get trained on that sort of thing.

Exactly... the difference in energy use is like driving a Ranger vs. an F-650. Sure, the big chungus models are a lot smarter, but it's diminishing returns on energy use to capability. Cutting out the fluff and using a much, much smaller and lighter model that is tuned for the task you are using it for is a lot more efficient, and people with macbooks or gaming computers can run a model on their computer instead of subbing to a cloud service.
