Guys it's for two different reasons. It's so the rims don't get bent out of shape which delays the game significantly as it gets corrected (no the NBA doesn't give a fuck about the cost of the actual rim). The second is safety of players, they don't want players hanging on the rim swinging their legs around potentially kicking other players in the face.
