Maybe it reduces the o lines motivation to do a better job. Or encourages QBs to hold the ball longer.

The brutality of the helmet slap we see sometimes, I have a hard time watching those replays

If anything it encourages the defender to make it worth their while and smash the QB harder

There's a lot of former players in not just this sport that think "Well if I'm going to get called and commit a penalty, I'm getting my money's worth out of it." If you're going to get slapped with that 15 yards, you'd better nail the fucker for your efforts.

That said I just wish officiating didn't reward playing like that.

But it doesn’t though. These rules have been in place for awhile now and I’ve never seen a player tee off on a QB just because they know they’re gonna get penalized anyway. If you can find me some examples I’d be happy to be proven wrong
