I don't like Trump either. But as others here have said he didn't say this. That's a quote from the article the quote from him says "You won't be able to sell those cars" not "I'll ban all electric car sales"

The order of the words

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world -3 points 5 months ago (2 children)

One implies he will personally forbid them from selling.

The other implies no one will want to buy them because they'll be too expensive by their nature.

[–] todd_bonzalez@lemm.ee 7 points 5 months ago (2 children)

4 years of Trump as president, and people are still trying to see nuance in what he says? Were you asleep from 2017-2020? We know enough about how he talks to know what he means. He's absolutely talking about blocking EV sales.

[–] prole@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

It's unreal. I'm convinced people are just collectively too stupid to ever fully escape this constant pull towards fascism.

We should maybe start getting used to the idea that we had a nice century or so of relative freedom and prosperity, and we're lucky to have been alive during it.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

He is still a dangerous cheat, corrupted, megalomaniac, and kind of stupid and easily manipulated. It's just that he probably didn't mean a ban in this case.

Just because he is dangerous doesn't mean we should also embrace misinformation against him. Plenty of legitimate information is damning enough, to embrace misinformation sites nothing but undermine the legitimate reasons to keep him the hell away from leadership.

I will accept just about anything to stop the fascism from taking control of our country at this point.

This has already been a propaganda war, the left just sucks at it. And when you're up against people willing to fight dirty with the future of the Republic at stake, and you're not willing to meet them at their level, you lose every time. And this is something we cannot lose.

So no, I'm ok with interpreting what we all fucking know he meant anyway, based on the ridiculous way he speaks and having to listen to it constantly for the past decade. I'm ok with that little stretch if it means my gay and trans friends in Florida don't end up against the fucking wall in a year and a half.

It's starting to get dire. I really don't think people grasp what happens if he wins again. And it will happen quickly.

Precisely because he says so much dangerous and stupid stuff we shouldn't feel the need to potentially misrepresent something else.

Like I can tactically see why Fox News latched into just the dumbest stuff for Obama because Obama didn't give them anything legitimate to work with to discredit him. Trump about hourly does or says something so terrible that we shouldn't have to resort to potentially misrepresenting stuff.

no one will want to buy them because they’ll be too expensive

China makes cheap electric vehicles. Why can't American shoppers buy them?

Its almost as though the import price of the vehicle is a consequence of US trade policy.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I was not saying he is correct, saying that was his likely meaning in this context. He's not exactly got a great track record of being smart or correct. Just in this case he didn't seem to mean a ban outright.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 0 points 5 months ago

He explicitly called for a ban of EV imports from Mexico. What's more outright than that?

[–] Devcatdan@lemmy.world 19 points 5 months ago (2 children)

Why are people downvoting this? Trump is a literal poison, but misinformation is misinformation. The author changed the meaning: "You won't be able to sell those cars, because they won't have EV incentives" NOT "because I'll ban them."

[–] Objection@lemmy.ml 4 points 5 months ago

Tribalism is a hell of a drug.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 5 months ago

Trump is a literal poison, but misinformation is misinformation.

Trump: "Won't someone rid me of these meddlesome electric vehicles?!"

Media: "Trump calls for elimination of electric vehicles."

Terminally Online Guy: "Um, aktuly, its ephebophilia".

[–] WldFyre@lemm.ee 14 points 5 months ago

"You won't be able to have an abortion, I never said I'd ban it, though!"
