not if you're producing a show like dune prophecy you don't, you can obviously show a society and technology cannon which is projected not to change one iota in 10 thousand fucking years, and morons will be like, hmmmmm interesting, sure, makes sense. blech.

That's pretty much how the Star Wars galaxy works. KOTOR is set 4000 years before the events of the original trilogy, and it's basically identical.
