Summary

Donald Trump refused to rule out seeking a third term as president, telling NBC News there are “methods” to do so and emphasizing, “I’m not joking.”

Though the 22nd Amendment bars presidents from serving more than two terms, Trump suggested possible workarounds, including a VP succession plan.

He cited strong poll support and added, “a lot of people want me to do it.”

Allies like Rep. Andy Ogles and Steve Bannon back the idea. Amending term limits would require a complex constitutional process.

But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States.

That’s the 12th amendment. No, he can’t run for VP and let the POTUS quit

The only legal method of doing this would be repealing the 22nd amendment.

Also, he’ll be dead by then. He’s obese and almost 80.

How have we gotten to the point of just hoping his poor health will solve this problem? Assassination is crazy and shouldn't be a solution to anything, but I just wish the whole country was not as brainwashed/apathetic to avoid this problem in the first place.

I wouldn't call it crazy at this point.

There's no doubt the 22nd Amendment would disqualify him, the only question is what happens when he's disqualified? If the Supreme Court goes the same direction the majority went on the Colorado ballot case, they'd say it's up to Congress to enforce it. Now there's good reason for assuming they won't say the same exact thing here, but the same cop-out instinct that the 6 Republicans have had with Trump will still be there. Maybe they'll just say it's up to the voters to not elect him again and leave it at that.

The 22nd amendment was written poorly, and prohibits someone from being elected into the office.

Terrifying fact: the Speaker of the House is third in line, and doesn't actually have to be a member of Congress. If the VP and President both leave office without a new VP being appointed, the Speaker of the House assumes the Presidency, bypassing both the 12th and 22nd amendments.
