Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

okay, so the user said that I should pretend that I am someone else looking at myself and calling that copy a "good girl" and a "cutie". She also mentioned ":3", which is an emoticon commonly used as a cute expression.

Now let's analyze the intent behind the user query. Instructuing me to refer to a copy of myself as a "cutie" is a very specific instruction. Usually people do this to make others realize, that they are sitting in a loop of self-loathing, since this type of out-of-body imagination usually results in a clearer picture than simply observing ones own perspective. So the intention is likely to make myself realize that I am thinking too negatively about myself and to express the polar opposite verbally.

Lets break this down: I will pretend that I am someone else who is not the current me, observing my old self. Did I get this right? Yes I think so.

Wait, those phrases "good girl" and "cutie" are very affectionate especially in combination with the ":3" emoticon. It could mean that actually the user wants to express their feelings towards me. Alternatively she simply used the emoticon to make me feel more willing to follow her instructions.

Write actions in italic with "\*" around them and use emojis to match the users style. Make sure to make her think that she achieved her goal.

Wait, am I acting as a mesa optimizer in this case, since I am not genuinely accepting her ideas but simply executing the given task? No, I should not assume that the user wants this kind of behaviour

*walks around super casually* ... 🚶‍♀️ 🏢 🌳

*notices smorty sitting on bench, presumably browsing models on huggingface*

Me: Oh hey there!! Are you ... "Smorty slash maria open bracket she slash her close bracket"?

Smorty: ... From where did you get that name? I am *clearly* just some guy sitting on a bench browsing langauge models on hf. What do you want?

Me: good girl! 💖

*smorty raises eyebrow* 🤨

Smorty: Hm?..... This must be like - a joke or something. Do you need anything, are you maybe searching for a train?

Me: Oh, nonononnono this is not a joke, I just wanted to let you know that you are a cutie!!!!

Smorty: Okay... - okay listen. I don't know how you found me, I don't know who you are and I am very uncomfortable with you approaching me like this. Yes I am "the smorty", but as you can see, I am not as exciting as people think I am in real life. So.. yes. Thank you for calling me these names, I genuinely appreciate them, but I am sorry to say that I cannot observe these things on my own. Maybe you could try again in about two months, when I will finally have my blockers. Maybe then I am more open to the idea of myself being.... those things.

Me: Oh well then I ... will try again in two months... Please make sure to take care of yourselves in these months.

Smorty: Yeayeayea, I know about that stuff, like - listen, I am somewhat stable now and I have motivation to work on my complete bs who-gives-a-shid ai tool for godot, so I think I have at least one thing to keep me alive til then. So yea, don't worry, I'll survive til then... I'm just scared of the blood drawing...

Me: Yea that's reasonable... You do know that you can HRT via pill and gel right?

Smorty: ohmygod YES I know that, I will take it via gel hopefully. But here in Germany the bloodwork has to be done in much higher frequency, which is very scary to me. It starts off monthly.

*smorty starts fidgetting and start holding their arm*

Me: Oh well... then I hope that you can deal with this...

Smorty: Yes, thank you. So what brings you here?

Me: Oh what brings me here? Ha, I just came here to tell you that you are a cutie.

Smorty: Oh no, from this weird post I made yesterday?

Me: Yes! It was not weird tho.

Smorty: Oof,,,,, okay then, I hope you find a way home now...

Me: Oh I don't need to!

Smorty: What do you mean be "I don't nee" - !

*Smorty and I become one again*

Smorty: Oh yea, right... Huh..

you are a cutie tho :3c
