I want to sign up but not sure what instance to use is dot social fine? I mostly want to use it for my friends circle

yes, imo dot social is totally fine. You can always move later, if you prefer something else...

I mean, there are differences in terms of features between the two. Also differences in terms of activity. In my area of interest (cybersecurity, web dev, technology) Mastodon has far more interesting (for me) activity than Bluesky.

In terms of servers: With Bluesky there is no choice of servers. With Mastodon there is. But in most cases the choice of server doesn't matter all that much with Mastodon.

IMO, for someone who doesn't know, it's best to just randomly pick from one of the big Mastodon servers (mastodon.social, mstdn.social, universeodon.com, etc) and get started. Don't overthink it.

Hence my comment: If you don't know, you won't really make a mistake by just going with dot social.

Yes, they are very similar. Are you familiar with Twitter? They all work basically the same, its only their interface that's different.

(Anyone who wants to nitpick this I'm well aware of the feature differences between the platforms)
