I'm new to Mastodon code and find it hard to understand exactly how some components are drawing and getting their data - If anyone could lend a hand or just answer a few questions, it would be amazing!

I'm also looking for admins who can install/test a branch or patch that extends the verify system in some nifty ways.

Please if you are familiar or just run your own instance, reach out because your help is greatly appreciated and could make the world a safer place.

I keep getting a "cannot find host" message when I try to post, boost, do anything. I haven't been on mstdn.social for a while, so I don't know if this is a known issue or if I'm doing something wrong. Any pointers would be appreciated.

I've had a Mastodon account in the "mstdn.social" instance for more than a year. But since today I cannot log in in that account, neither via app (Tusky) nor in my laptop browser.

But there's more: I can't even open anything related with that instance without getting an ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT screen.

I'm creating a new account in other instance, but when I try to migrate my old account data it says that my old account cannot be found. And now I'm wondering if they are having problems or if that instance is definitely shut down.

Is anyone else having the same issues? How can I know for sure if the instance is being deleted?

So, my instances have been offline for the better part of a month, and I haven't had a lot of time or energy to fix the problem I caused trying to update to 4.2.1.

At what point is it not worth restoring an instance and best to just start from scratch? I don't want to end up burning more domains and user names, but it's a question since a lot of that stuff doesn't get purged I don't think from other servers, specifically the encrypted keys and identity information.

Hi there. In these times, folks are becoming more aware on how the social media companies are tracking their activity online, and selling the data for AI training purposes. They're getting tired of being sold to third parties as a product, instead of being the customers or users of these platforms.

Sadly, Mastodon is losing its chance to become a real alternative to this business model. Why? Because the majority of users, me included, are no less sick and tired of online radical politics, regardless of orientation, being forced 24/7 upon them. They just want a friendly conversation on life, job and hobby topics... and perhaps also opt-in from time to time on the denser subjects of social and political issues. Mastodon claims to be ad-free... but in fact, the majority of contents over there can still be considered political ads disguised as personal takes.

An example: I went to instances.social, picked up spanish language... users and content were just the default. And this was the very first entry coming out:

Wij verwelkomen anarchisten, socialisten, (klimaat)activisten, LHBTQIA+-personen, milieubewuste mensen, intersectionelen, antiracisten, antifascisten, antikapitalisten, veganisten, piraten, mensenrechtenactivisten, enz. Als ze maar radicaal, links én anti-autoritair zijn".

The default instance on most of the Mastodon apps for the phone, is equally focused on radical politics in the feed, and its not reflective of the interests of the general public as a whole, but rather alienating. This is a boon to Zuckerberg and Musk... not to the majority of users, open source, or internet privacy. It is not surprising, given this fact, that Mastodon moderators have repeatedly tended to ban the users for the most perplexing reasons (likely because of not being politically radical enough). Regardless, not the way an alternative to the mainstream social media should ever be.

Everybody should be able to enjoy a conversation in a wide array of controversial topics if they desire to, but users should be able to opt-in, not being forced-in. Unless this changes, so that Mastodon becomes a truly welcoming site (even for the people who're sick of ideology being fed into their throats, which are many), there's no chance for it to become the alternative to commercial social media that it aims to be.

I am trying to get my instances back online, but the new update made it where my multi-instance setup wasn't as easy to maintain. Not sure if I just need to add the information for the ports to the new streaming.service files like before or not, but wanted to try and get a Docker install going.

... It's not going well.

Everytime I start modifying the docker-compose.yml file as instructed since I am not modifing the code, and want elasticsearch enabled, I get key not found where expected line 2.

The white space rules for yml are kicking my ass and I don't care for it.

Any help either on this or just getting my old setup functioning properly would be appreciated.

Hi, I'm relatively new to mastodon and my instance appears to have shut down without notice. Very frustrating. I didn't do the sensible thing of backing up my account (albeit didn't post that often so not so bothered about content, and setting up a blog soonish). I want to move my account so my followers follow the new one, can I make that happen without being able to log into the old account? Or do I have to start from scratch and just chalk this up to experience? I really value being on mastodon and decentralised alternatives to corporation run services despite the learning curve involved. TIA for any help you can give.

(Is THAT better?) Now if I can, how the hell do i change my frigging @ on mastodon? I don't want to have to make a new account but I'll probably have to right? (Tried asking this before, and didn't get an answer just got my post removed) (i'm in .social btw)

Cosmetics.

Let's offer paid cosmetics for users of your instance. Animated or custom banners, posts, new themes, etc.

It's a model that works really well for Discord and League of Legends. Instances offering to sell aesthetic luxury to their user base could work for Mastodon too.

It's non-invasive, it's optional, it's a great addition for some people, and it allows to raise funds to keep the hosted instances up and running.

Do you think it's viable?

i used a Tutorial to change the Character Limit from Mastodon from 500 to 10000 Chars, it all went well no errors, i recompiled and reloaded with "systemctl restart mastodon-sidekiq.service mastodon-streaming.service mastodon-web.service"

when i use

I just inherited a Mastodon server that was on 3.5.1. I've got it upgraded to 3.5.15, which appears to the be latest version of the 3.5 branch. Which branch should I upgrade to now? 4.x, 4.1.x, or 4.2.x?

I've just joined Mastodon, and I'm a little confused about the effect of joining a particular server. If I understand it correctly, I can join any server, but then I can search or follow users and hashtags across all of Mastodon?

If that's right, then what difference does it make which server I actually join? Does the server determine what posts/news I see without searching?

Hi, I am unable to post GIFs or Videos in my Mastodon server, I don;t see any errors in logs

its just stuck in processing, I am getting a 201 from /v2/media and then constant 206, but nothing happens after hours too

I have a Mastodon feed on my blog through Mastofeed.com. However, it never updates. You have to completely clear your browser cache every time you want it to update. This is true on all browsers, including Chrome and Firefox.

How do I fix this? This is unacceptable.

i run a Mastodon instance under a domain that is pre-setup by a Hoster, but i want full control so i bought a own VPN and setup mastodon after a Tutorial (https://zap-hosting.com/guides/docs/vserver-linux-mastodon/) it worked like a charm, but...

i cant Configure the Webserver, domain and Certbot to my Domain because i first want to make sure the Mastodon Instance is perfectly working under my IP before i set it up with the Domain and replace my old Server

How do you do that? i started all Services but my IP still only shows a 403 Forbidden Error...

I see no arrows for browsing through uploaded images in gallery with mouse.

Is this a miss, or is it turned off on instance in which I am?

I'd expect it to be normal to be able to click on arrows and browse through images with ease.

Those 3 dots below are too small to actually do anything, and doing this with a keyboard is a hassle,

when I'm used to browse galleries with my mouse.

I've got two domains that I registered to setup regional instances of Mastodon for New York City and Los Angeles. They cost a lot to get the initial registration and I thought they'd be less expensive to renew. Turns out that is not the case, so I'd like to sell them at cost to someone that will put them to use.
