My personal take is that when Josh Allen has a great game, he is essentially the best QB that the world has ever seen. Fortunately for the rest of the league though, he doesn't have the consistency to reach those heights every week, and his lows tend to be lower than most other elite QBs.
Like Patrick Mahomes plays most games between 85%-97% on a great "Quarterbacking Scale." Josh Allen can reach 100%, but he also has more games at like 65%.
I do think thats heavily on playcalling rather than just him, and saw execution by the team.
Just a small example, Allen still deserves a heavy portion of blame on these...but week 1 against the Jets, his 2 interceptions were aided by Gabe Davis running the shittiest low effort route I have ever seen, which telegraphed where the ball was going and the coverage help didnt get pulled away.
The other interception rookie Dalton Kincaid didnt carry his route deep enough, which was supposed to peel coverage off Diggs.
He blacks out then crashes for a game and a half.
Allen is Brett Favre 2
The word you're looking for is variance.
Josh Allen can bounce anywhere between completely unbeatable and singularly responsible for creating a loss, in the same month. Other quarterbacks can't peak like he can but they also don't tend to disintegrate the same way either.
When Josh is locked in, he's virtually unstoppable. If he gets off to a shaky start, sometimes he gets in a hole and struggles to get out, or becomes desperate to put on a cape and save the game, and that sometimes backfires.
So yeah, locked in Josh is an absolute force, but nobody knows why it's not more consistent.
As a Chiefs fan, you may be surprised to hear that I feel the same way about Mahomes. When he’s on, the game is already over (unless it’s the 2022 divisional game where both Allen and Mahomes went Ultra Instinct at the same time), but if you can get him out of his laser focus state then you have a shot.
Yeah, Mahomes is scary. Never fun going up against him. With how depleted our defense is right now, I am not looking forward to this matchup.
The Bills vs The Chiefs is always a good matchup for the NFL, with how the teams go back and forth, but for the fans of the team? I don't know about you, but my blood pressure is most certainly TERRIBLE when I watch.
If I die before 60 from cardiac arrest, I’m blaming Bills/Chiefs.
That game was (and probably will be honestly) the best combined quarterback play I have ever seen in a game. Just outrageous stuff
Honestly I think the truth is mahomes has the best offensive coach to help develop and scheme. Allen has a 2nd year OC who can’t stop running draw plays. We saw the last Daboll year Allen could sustain MVP level play all year.
Mahomes is the best in the business but I think we can all acknowledge landing in KC maximized what he could and can be.
Josh Allen’s best is better than anybody else
That mf can make every throw, break tackles, rush for 100 yards, and dominate.
He’s not that guy all the time though.
You nailed it. When Josh is on he might be the best QB ever, but he only reaches that level a handful of times per year. The highs are high and the lows are low.
He's definitely at the 100 mark every time he plays the Chiefs.
He's honestly just Ryan Fitzpatrick if he were an elite physical specimen. Stick Ryan Fitzpatrick's brain in Cam Newton's body and you get Josh Allen.
Outside of the Jets game his lows this year really have been that low. He hasn't been beating as much it seems. Unfortunately everything else on this team is just steadily breaking.
Losing to the 2023 is lower than I thought I’d see
isnt that the case when any player has an awesome game?
