How do you accidentally get in the wrong car?

[–] zout@fedia.io 44 points 1 day ago

Happened to me once, it turns out 1988 Mazda 323's don't have that unique keys.

Done that too, but it was kinda the other cars fault. They were a smart ass who purposely parked next to an all black 2020 Pacifica that is left "running" and also leaves their all black 2020 Pacifica running. There were many other parking spaces available. The lady's kids were a bit freaked out when a 6' overweight white guy hopped in their van.

Edit: this was at night.

I didn't appreciate that my someone had apparently spent a year smoking in my car while I was inside the pizza shop.

[–] abbadon420@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

Hate when that happens

Have you heard of face blindness? I have kind of the same thing but with cars. As long as it's the same color, they all look more or less the same to me unless they have bumper stickers. I also travel a lot for work, so I'm constantly getting new rentals that are all a bit different, so I never remember what I'm driving.

Those factors combined with having a poor awareness of where I am in physical space and time most days has caused me to get into the wrong car way more times than I'd like to admit. I'm just going to say it's well into the double digits.

It's kind of surprising how many people just leave their cars completely unlocked. I always lock mine, and when the door just opens after I hit the button to unlock my car, I assume I'm getting into the right one until it feels wrong when I sit down or if I try to put the key in the ignition and it doesn't fit. The number of times this has happened would be higher if more people didn't lock their cars. I quickly realize it's the wrong car if I try to unlock it and it doesn't unlock.

Well just be glad it's not bird blindness, that can be tricky when you think something is just a duck but it's actually an eagle.

This happened at a restaurant with a door dash driver. I was breastfeeding in the backseat and she got in my drivers seat. Was super apologetic when she realized. The kicker is that her car, which was next to mine, was a completely different make and model. Just a similar color. I always locked the doors when breastfeeding after that.

I can see it happening if both cars are the same/similar make and model and they're parked close by

[–] christian@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah I opened the door to the wrong car once before and almost got in. I can picture myself getting as far as sitting down, but I can't picture myself realizing and then thinking "hey there's no rush so I should pull out my phone to take a photo of this dog before leaving".

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

And you’d probably notice the dog before you got to sitting down.
