When the cost of living is so egregiously high that not only do you need two jobs, but you have to do them at the same time
A software engineer needs two jobs. Which means most people need at least 4. Or 3 if they live under a bridge.
A software engineer does not need two jobs. That's ridiculous.
It sounds ridiculous, yes, but there are US software engineers who basically work for minimum wage full time doing freelance work because that is all they can find
https://www.businessinsider.com/why-google-employees-live-in-the-parking-lot-2015-10?op=1
I mean if you read the article, one of them saved for a year or 2 and bought a house (I’m assuming large down payment for a mortgage), one had a “house payment and alimony” (so basically paying half the salary to the ex), one was saving up 90% of income doing this.
These are people who were either striving for FIRE or had other shit happen to them.
Obviously the area is ridiculously expensive, but software engineers make more than enough to live on a single job. If they still have jobs of course.
Ok so a software engineer needs 3 or 4.
Imagine that driver working an only fans account while driving.
This is known and quite popular genre of porn.
anything's possible with self driving cars
That's startup life. Dude might be rolling in it in a couple years and it's a decision. Feel bad for the non tech workers around the bay
Doubtful given 70-90% of startups fail.
he did say "might be" 😅
Everyone who plays the lottery might be a millionaire too
Yeah it's risky. People do it multiple times though and one success pays out. It's a risky choice that I wouldn't make but I understand why people do
Clown town libertarian take.
Lmao yes, telling you to feel bad for non tech workers in the bay area makes me libertarian
likely not tho.
You could work for a startup that still pays a livable wage so you don’t have to do something this reckless. That is an option.
Not sure why this is downvoted. It's a lifestyle choice that is a genuine choice. You don't have to live in SF if it's not for you.
Yeah I don't get it. You can also work for established companies where you get steady income instead of volatile stocks but you're not going to be able to retire super early with a work life balance that way
Exactly. I got a drive by downvote which is a shame. Some people are in a situation where they're happy to take a risk, and know that if it fails they won't be destitute, and sometimes you might be paid more to account for the risk. Or less, but you get stock options to account for the risk. They're all valid options as long as you're not forced into it.
