trust me when I say this. downgrade the operating system to the original iOS 4.3 version and you'll hear the difference in sound quality. paired with low ohm, high efficiency headphones like koss or grados, It's unreal how good it sounds.

what does the os have to do with anything?

changes the sound dramatically.

but how does it change the sound? i bet its just a placebo like a lot of things in this hobby

There's a real difference, also try to make sure that you get a unit produced before the late 2010 board revision - coupled with the OS roll back it just poses a greater contrast for how far Apple devices' analogue audio output quality has declined.

the audio drivers and background processors affect the sound. something you just gotta try yourself to find out.

It does for some reason (I downgraded my 4 from 7.1.2 to 4.3) and noticed a better and louder sound from the DAC

This! I downgraded my iPhone 4 from 7.1.2 to 4.3 and the sound changed for some reason
