but how does it change the sound? i bet its just a placebo like a lot of things in this hobby

There's a real difference, also try to make sure that you get a unit produced before the late 2010 board revision - coupled with the OS roll back it just poses a greater contrast for how far Apple devices' analogue audio output quality has declined.

the audio drivers and background processors affect the sound. something you just gotta try yourself to find out.

It does for some reason (I downgraded my 4 from 7.1.2 to 4.3) and noticed a better and louder sound from the DAC
