The key mistake that these people make is that trying to show off and impress everyone is a mark of lacking class. The true elites only care about impressing the other elites.
This is also what people miss about the business card scene in American Psycho. People think it's silly how these men get hung up on superficial details, but the whole point is that these things matter to the only people they consider to matter.
This is absolutely true. I would much rather another watch nerd give me the knowing nod of recognition than some Joe Schmo off the street saying ooh is that a Rolex
Got a Seiko alpinist spb121j recently and had a client at work notice it and say "nice watch I love the alpinist" Sparked a conversation about watch collecting and how its not always about the most expensive watch or brand but what you love.
