Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

  1. I tried seeing if the site has Amorous on there because it's, IMO, the poster child for furry VNs and I couldn't find it. Absolute tragedy the people behind the original list or whatever haven't been exposed to it because I'd love to see the meltdown they'd have over it.
  2. Shame that I'd have to change the privacy feature on my account to see how "woke" I am because I'm sure it'd say I'm definitely woke. Especially since I like Amorous.
  3. Apparently the first Hitman game, the game about killing people, is woke because of diversity in a game set in 1999. How low can you sink?
  4. I LOVE how they mark BioShock 2 of all games not woke. The main antagonist running Rapture at that point is a woman, so you'd think those idiots would immediately mark it as woke because it's set in the past. That and just because she's a woman in power.

I'll probably quickly change the setting on my account and see what the site says, for fun, and change it back right after. I checked my friend and it gave him a woke score so good for him.

I checked my account before posting my comment and it says I'm not woke. Crazy thing is, if the original people had more of the games on my list in their "woke" steam list or whatever, they'd absolutely call me woke. They'd probably have the biggest meltdown over things like the Danganronpa series, Dofus/Wakfu/Krosmaga ( female deities/fighters ), and the BlazBlue series.

1: They do have "A Gay Love Story About Gay Love", marked as Woke, though. 4: It's because she's a villain doing things portrayed as big mistakes. See also the Portal 2 discussion:

On the scientists, I think it would be less Woke if they were all female. It seems that the events in the games take place in large part because the arrogant/foolish scientists lose control of their own experiment.

Maybe it's just me, but them being able to create amazing technologies seems like less of a problem if they lose control and all die as a result.

There's an implication there that they got in over their head and/or were incapable of handling the work they were doing.

I think that's a pretty good example of the effects of DEI in the workplace.

Not to get too far into the weeds, but you could relate this to what has happened to Star Wars/Star Trek.

A bunch of women in corporate positions produced a bunch of new media (which generated tangible results at first) but then the whole thing collapsed as a result of their methods and the IP are essentially dead at this point.

Maybe not an exact comparison, but there are parallels.
