It's common knowledge that FTs are by far the most valuable shot these days. They need to be somewhat overvalued to disincentivize fouling, but it's arguably gone too far.

League average 3pt percentage is about 0.35. League average FT percentage is about 0.78. So if someone gets fouled on a 3pt shot, their expected points goes from 1.05 pts to 2.34 pts, more than doubling.

What if instead, players had to shoot from the spot of the foul. So for a corner 3, you have to take 3 shots from the corner. It'd reflect shooting skill more because players would have to adjust to the different positions instead of just building muscle memory from a specific location. It also makes things a bit more balanced for big men who get fouled under the rim.

Techs, non shooting fouls in the bonus, etc would probably still be taken at the FT line.

This is a really stupid idea. No other sports do it like this. The idea of a foul is to disincentivize fouling.. it’s completely fair to get free throws if you’re fouled.

Plus what happens if you’re Giannis and get fouled under the rim? Or on the other side of the court when you’re in the bonus? Do you just have to chuck the ball across the entire court for each free throw?

This just overcomplicates basketball.
