I mean, for ANC away from home listening, they aren't bad. I'd have bought an older used model, but I understand wanting the latest version new. Are they the best audio you can get for the money? No, but they're convenient and have some nice features. I think they're a decent buy.

I’ve got the xm4s and they’re just bad. Compared to something modest like some dt770s they sound awful so I just don’t enjoy listening. I appreciate they have anc though but not worth it for the poor sound quality

You're comparing apples to oranges. Two different products for different purposes. And I own both a pair of DT770s and XM3s. I use both for different reasons. They're not even remotely comparable.

Either Focal Bathys, PX7 S2, or a lil expensive Sennheiser M4

So if my goal is great ANC and great Audio I should take the sennies M4 over thr sonys? Given we ignore tuning preferences ofc

i have the xm4 so not quite the newest but they are designed for traveling on a plane. every part of it is optimized for that kinda high volume constant rumbling environment and they are in my opinion the best headphone for that environment. but they are not critical listening headphones nor do they try to be. so i would say that if you are planning on doing a lot of traveling with them i would go woth the sonys if you are going to be using them in like an office there are better sounding headphones

I’ve owned pretty much all of the top end ANCs out there, including the ones you mention, and I settled with the Sennheiser Momentum 4. They’re a comparative bargain and the sound signature is good. ANC is good enough. The Sonys are bloated sounding and too expensive, the B&W have a really wonky midrange and the Focals are not even close to being worth the premium.
